The Business
The Vale Clydach Nickel Refinery (CNR)is critical part of Vale Base Metals, North Atlantic and Asia flowsheet and is responsible for producing Class 1 nickel products. Processing a nickel oxide feed from Vale upstream plants, located in both Japan and Canada, CNR produces approximately 40,000tonnes of Nickel Pellets and Powders. CNR is well established and has been in operation since 1902 and employs an approximate 195 full time employees. The refinery is classed as an Upper Tier COMAH site and operates under and environmental permit.
As the world embarks on its journey to mitigate climate change, the products produced by Vale Base Metals, including the nickel produced at CNR will play a critical part the production of batteries and required infrastructures.
The Role
The Production Manager role is to ensure the safe and efficient operation of assets at Clydach Refinery to allow operational targets to be achieved. With Vale’s key value being ‘Life Matters Most’, management of both occupational and process safety risks will be essential elements of the role.
Due to the inherent risks related to the processes and being an Upper Tier COMAH site, the Production Manager should have a strong understanding of process safety management which they will employ in the execution of their role. To support this the Production Manager and their Learning and Development team will development and maintain and competence framework for their teams.
The role will manage the Production department which incorporates teams in operations, maintenance execution, and Learning and Development. The role will ensure that operational and maintenance routines are established, systemised and continually optimised to allow for the effective processing of feed materials and production of nickel products. Furthermore, these routines and practices should be designed to reduce risk to as low as reasonably practicable.
The Production Manager role is a strategic role at the refinery and is a member of the Clydach Leadership Team. As well as having oversight and responsibility for day to day operations, the role will have a two to five year time horizon where strategic opportunities and risks should be identified and built into the refinery plan.
The role will be a key interface with internal and external stakeholders including the Health, Safety and Environmental regulators, customers, third party suppliers and peers within Vale.
The ideal candidate will possess strong Senior Leadership skills gained in a Manufacturing/ Process Industry. Experience of working in an upper tier COMAH site and a strong working knowledge of Process Safety are essential. An understanding of continuous improvement and lean practices are desirable. Additionally the role will require well developed interpersonal, a high degree of emotional intelligence,a sound problem solving ability and solid communication skills. The role will require a good knowledge of Microsoft Packages.
