Product Safety Engineer
Multiple Thales Locations, Hybrid
Reading, Crawley, Cheadle, Templecombe, Belfast, Bristol
Key Responsibilities
Undertaking activities identified in Safety Management Plans as directed by the Project Safety Manager;
Recording and archiving project safety requirements and ensuring they are included on the project design baseline;
Identifying and analysing accidents, hazards and risks;
Creating and maintaining project Hazard Logs, including appropriate traceability to the Causes, Consequences, Risk Control Measures, Assumptions, etc.;
Collating and configuring evidence necessary to complete Safety Assessments/Cases;
Capturing, reporting and resolving safety issues, and
Creating reports and artefacts to support safety assessments/cases, including deliverable items.
The candidate will demonstrate the following skills & knowledge
Working knowledge of Safety Management System processes, having regularly implemented SMS processes to meet project requirements.
Familiar with different types of safety analysis techniques (FTA, Event Tree, FMECA, RBD, LOPA, QRA) and their application.
Understands safety assessment processes, how they meet requirements and have implemented them on safety programmes.
Familiar with, and understands the requirements and purpose of Safety Management Plans, having implemented them for a simple products and managed the work package activities.
Familiar with processes by which safety requirements are captured, recorded and managed.
Knows standards and can identify sources of safety requirements (Def Stan, BS EN, ISO, IEC, etc.)
Understands that products must comply with legal and regulatory requirements (HASAWA, UK SI’s, EU Product Directives etc.).
Implementing techniques (compliance matrices and other methods) to ensure that safety requirements are identified and met.
Good working knowledge of formal Hazard ID and risk assessment methodologies (HAZID, HAZOP, FHA, BowTies etc.) knowing which is appropriate to use, having implemented on projects.
Knows how to create, populate and maintain a hazard log.
General awareness that 3rd party organisation SMS, processes and products must be assessed and safety requirements flowed down
Familiar with the legal requirements (MAA RA’s, DMR, LSSR etc.) that require safety arguments/cases to be generated and has created safety arguments/cases for simple products.
Familiar with the requirements for occurrence investigation of incidents.
Contributed to the production of root cause analysis, incident reports and aided in the communication of lessons learnt.
General awareness of the basic safety engineering techniques, concepts and tools (BowTieXP, RWB, FaultTree+, eCassandra, DOORS) and have applied some to their work.
Education
Bachelor Degree (BEng, BSc) in a Numerate, Scientific or Engineering subject or Higher Education/equivalent training and experience.
Desirable: Masters Degree (MEng, MSc) or postgraduate level in Engineering, Physics or Mathematics-related subject is an advantage.
HNC/HND qualification may be acceptable with relevant experience in the technical areas indicated above
