What are we looking for
Product Compliance & Validation is responsible for the compliance, functional safety, validation & long-term testing of ITM’s portfolio of electrolyser products.
We have an opportunity for a Product Process Safety Officer. The role will involve creating, recruiting as necessary and leading the Process Safety Team to ensure that ITM Power’s electrolyser product portfolio is functionally safe for use in the market segments in which they will be deployed and used by Customers.
Responsible for reviewing current process safety practices and the development of a process safety management framework, taking guidance from OSHA 1910.119 in the U.S., and the SEVESO Directive in Europe. Furthermore, industry guidelines available from other professional associations such as the Centre for Chemical Process Safety (CCPS).
To be the technical safety authority and owner of hazard studies including close-out to time and budget, management of change (MOC) process where appropriate, pre-start up safety review (PSSR), relief blowdown and flare simulations etc.
Creator and responsible person for implementing functional safety assessments where needed.
Responsibilities
Responsible for managing the Process Safety Team and to lead, co-ordinate, and support process safety risk assessment activities including HAZOP, HazID and LOPA. Develop ALARP principles and calculations to support LOPA assessments.
- Leading and mentoring a small team of safety engineers
- Conduct 6 monthly training and competence reviews of Product Safety Team
- Facilitate and participate in Hazard and Operability (HAZOP) and Layers of Protection Analysis (LOPA) studies, including other Process Hazard Analysis (PHA) studies, i.e. Hazard Identification (HAZID), What-If, Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA)
- Delegate and track progress through to completion of actions and recommendations, including chairing HAZOP LOPA close-out meetings
- Lead technical safety reviews
- Support creation of product basis of safety documentation
- As Low as Reasonably Practicable (ALARP) demonstration – cost benefit analysis (CBA)
- Knowledgeable in IEC 61508 and IEC 61511 with good understanding and / or application of all stages of the design cycle, i.e. analysis, design, implementation, operation and Maintenance
- Lead in the development of a Functional Safety Management (FSM) plan, i.e. functional safety assessment (FSA) stages 1 through 5
- Lead in the development of a process safety management framework
- Creation / review of Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS) proof test procedures
- Proficient in Quantitative Risk Analysis (QRA) reviews – Safety Integrity Level (SIL) verification calculations in terms of reliability block diagrams (RBDs), Fault Tree Analysis (FTA) etc.
- Develop alarm management lifecycle processes
- Familiarity with process control via PLC systems
- Improve awareness of process / functional safety across the business, i.e. through internal training
- Client liaison as appropriate and necessary
About You
Knowledge and Experience
- Chemical / Electrical Engineering or other Safety Engineering related degree, and either Chartered status or actively seeking it through a recognised organisation e.g. IChemE, MSaRS or similar
- >5 years as a process/functional safety engineer
- Certified functional safety expert, i.e. FS Engineer (TÜV Rheinland) or similar
- Certified and/or experienced in chairing HAZOP and LOPA studies
Advantageous:
- Knowledge of explosive atmospheres (IEC 60079 and ATEX/DSEAR regulations)
- Consequence analysis using proprietary software such as DNV PHAST
- Broader understanding of regional safety and compliance legislation
- Process simulation experience with Aspentech HYSYS, Honeywell UniSim and/or other Fluid Flow modelling software for single and two/-phase applications
- Safety relief valve sizing to API 520 part 1, API 520 part 2, ISO 4126 – single and two-phase
- Flare systems modelling
- Site Experience

- Good written and verbal reporting skills and the ability to communicate effectively across all levels within ITM and to external parties as required
- Ability to work to tight and sometimes changing deadlines
- Be able to influence and guide work activities to facilitate on time delivery of products and projects
- Able to communicate clearly and effectively at all levels within ITM including to Executive board level
