Platinum Group Metal Services (PGMS) is one of four sectors within Johnson Matthey that manages, distributes, refines and recycles precious metals and fabricates products using precious metals and related materials. The business unit also manufactures platinum group metals, minor metal compounds, organometallics and fine metal powders for high technology applications, as well as providing a range of management services for platinum group metals.
PGMS has manufacturing operations in the UK, US and China and sells to key markets globally across Europe, the US and Asia.
Job purpose
The main purpose of the role is to design, develop and improve hydrometallurgical processes within the PGM Refinery, Values Recovery Plant (VRP) and effluent processes. The work will involve monitoring and analysis of process data in conjunction with laboratory, pilot and plant scale development and commissioning trials for our operations at Royston. You will also support operations with continuous improvement projects and aid in day-to-day operational technical issues, process monitoring and problem solving.
Your responsibilities
You will promote high environmental, health and safety standards and behaviours for yourself and your co-workers.
Develop and improve hydrometallurgical, thermal and concentration processes in conjunction with production, customers, external technology suppliers, JMTC and other members of the technical team.
Monitor and analyse hydrometallurgical processes and data, supporting resolution of issues proactively identify out of control processes and investigate root cause in a timely fashion to minimise impact on Business and Operational performance.
Use knowledge of statistical analysis and data visualisation packages (e.g. JMP, Minitab, Tableau, etc.) to provide robust data driven solutions to technical problems, and to communicate these findings in a clear and professional form.
Undertake bench, pilot and plant scale experimental work as required to meet
Work closely with and support other technical functions in the implementation and early production stages of new feeds and processes.
Requirements for the role:
First degree in Chemistry (or similar) based subject. Essential
Master’s degree or PhD in Chemistry or similar natural science-based subject - Desirable
Experience within process development or relevant operations experience - Desirable
High level of numeracy working with systems and data - Essential
Ability to write technical reports detailing Problem resolutions, process improvements and experimental findings in a clear and evidence based way. - Essential
An understanding of heat and mass balances, P&IDs and PFDs and other process docs Desirable
