Principal Data Analyst

Salary: £50,000 - £60,000 per annum
Location: Southwark, London (with options for Hybrid working)
Contract Type: TfL Permanent

Overview of the role

Data analysis is at the heart of TfL’s Safety, Health and Environment (SHE) directorate, ensuring we are focussed on TfL’s key risks and everything we do is evidence-led.

The Principal Data Analyst role is central to delivering this vision, providing technical leadership right across our team of analysts to deliver reporting and insightful analysis to stakeholders that include City Hall, TfL’s Board and Executive Committee.

About you

We are looking for a talented Principal Data Analyst with a passion for making our transport network safer. You will be responsible for delivering accurate, consistent and meaningful reporting and analysis that enables data-driven strategy and decisions. You will thrive when coaching junior analysts to develop their skills and deliver their best work. You will prioritise responding to developments in best practice across data analytics to ensure that the team is using the latest methodologies.

You will be part of a community of analysts within TfL, which provides opportunities to learn with and from others. The successful candidate will enjoy contributing to a community of analysts working to serve Londoners.

Skills knowledge and experience (all essential unless indicated otherwise)

Skills

  • Able to work with, wrangle and interpret complex datasets - you will have the opportunity to engage with the breadth of TfL’s activity
  • Creation of intuitive and compelling data visualisations
  • Able to ensure that analysis is reproducible and conducted transparently
  • Able to develop and manage clear peer review processes to ensure that outputs are high quality and fit for publication
  • Be curious about our data and have a desire to ask “why?”
  • Able to engage with peers across the business to continually keep pushing the boundaries of what good looks like for TfL

Knowledge

  • Ideally an expert in R (although other programming languages will be considered)
  • Writing clear documentation for analytical products
  • Current and emerging analytical trends and developments
  • Designing performance indicators and metrics
  • Setting data standards
  • Mayor's Transport Strategy and TfL's business priorities
  • Building and using risk models to analyse safety priorities (Desirable)

Experience

  • Eliciting requirements from customers, putting yourself in their shoes and providing constructive challenge where appropriate
  • Producing business insight to drive strategy and decision-making
  • Contributing to a data-driven culture
  • Building consensus between stakeholders who may be pulling in different directions
  • Continually learning technical and soft skills to be the best analyst you can be
  • Communicating complex information in a clear and compelling way
  • Delivering and overseeing high quality analytical reports
  • Building and analysing risk models (Desirable)
