Eaton Mission Systems Division previously known as Cobham is the world’s leading provider of hose and drogue Air-to-Air Refuelling (AAR) systems and Actuation. Eaton work directly with the aircraft manufacturers and end-users to develop systems that achieve their operations in challenging environments, safely and successfully.
We have an exciting opportunity for a Principal Systems Engineer to join the business, with the opportunity to act or grow as a subject matter expert (depending on the level of expertise) to influence the future systems engineering capability at MSD. The Principal Systems Engineer will work across the business and provide support to projects at various stages of the product development lifecycle. This will include requirements elicitation, analysis, validation, management, and architecture development, trade studies etc.
The Principal Systems engineer will develop operational concepts, system architectures, and step in when required to ensure excellence in systems delivery. Depending on the level of expertise, this role can act or has the potential to evolve into a subject matter expert in systems engineering to develop, implement, and manage new systems engineering tools and processes into the business as well as mentoring and training the system engineering community. This role is based at Wimborne, Dorset. We are able to offer flexible working arrangements, such as working remotely with attendance on site on an agreed basis as required.
The colocation of all the engineering disciplines at Wimborne provides a unique opportunity for you to develop yourself across multi-disciplinary engineering functions.
We will provide the training and development opportunities for you to develop your own capabilities within System Engineering and the products we develop.
Essential Functions
- Develop Operational Concepts (ConOps, OpCon) and use cases for our next generation of systems
- Lead and deliver work packages across various stages of the systems lifecycle processes.
- Elicit, analyse, and manage system requirements, own the preparation of system requirements specifications in accordance with customer, legislation, human factors and business needs.
- Work with other systems engineers to ensure best practice in requirements elicitation and management, creating a SMART and therefore verifiable sets of requirements.
- Develop company best practices and use to create system/sub-system architectures and the decomposition, allocation of requirements into sub-systems and LRUs.
- Identify and clearly specify the interfaces at the system and sub-system level
- Plan and budget systems engineering activities
- Produce technical reports and Systems/Requirements Management Plans
- Influence and lead the continuous improvement of the systems engineering capability at MSD
- Act as an internal consultant for systems engineering principles and practices
Qualifications
Experience Required
- Degree in aeronautical, mechanical, electrical engineering or equivalent experience
- Experience working on complex systems for at least 5 years, with it being desirable that the experience was gained within the Aerospace, Military or safety critical Industry.
- Experience of planning, leading and executing requirements capture and systems architectures development using requirements capture tools (e.g. CRADLE, Rhapsody and DOORS NG) and other standard systems tools and methods.
- Experience of interfacing with internal and external customers to negotiate, capture, and validate system concepts, requirements and architectures.
- Understand the significance of Systems Thinking and has an appreciation of applying Systems Thinking to solve problems.
- Can problem solve, able to apply critical thinking to form opinions on issues and proposed concepts, and is self-motivated to drive issues to resolution.
- Knowledge of systems engineering processes across all stages of the engineering lifecycle including exposure to industry standards such as ARP4754A, IEC15288 is desirable.
- Exposure to Model Based Systems Engineering and Modelling Languages (e.g. SysML) is desirable.
- Effective communicator in formal and informal situations.
- Must have or be eligible obtain SC Clearance.
- Chartered engineer in the UK or working towards chartership is desirable
