The Opportunity
Your role as a Principal Mechanical Engineer will be to contribute to the design, develop and support of our work-leading radar and electro-optic products. You will bring servo-controlled mechanism experience to add a new dimension to our mechanical engineering design. Working with our Mechanical Engineering Team and Servo-Control Group, you will be instrumental in the implementation of servo-controlled mechanism systems.

What you will do
- Promote best practice and knowledge sharing of modelling mechanisms in CREO.
- Promote best practice and knowledge sharing of mechanical analysis of mechanisms and servo-controlled systems including computational modelling techniques and supporting calculations (for example gear mesh assessment, pitting and strength calculations, friction and torque budgets and digital twin / exchange of data into the servo control mechanisms tool set).
- Take responsibility for the design of servo-controlled mechanisms and disseminate servo-control knowledge to the wider mechanical group
- Liaise with supply chain on mechanical servo matters and assess third party servo control mechanism designs (sub contracts)
- Design, conduct and carry out test programs on motors, encoders, bearings, and slip rings, for example
- Develop new ways to increase pointing stabilisation and act as the mechanical point of contact
- It would be beneficial to have some experience of the servo-control tool set used by our system engineers including Simscape and Simulink, to allow efficient exchange of data
- Provide technical direction/support on critical business programmes to ensure delivery of mechanical engineering excellence.
- Provide key support to critical technical problem investigations and deliver effective solutions.
- Mentor design engineers with on-the-job coaching.
- Support and facilitate reviews and sign off release of mechanical designs in accordance with business and industry standards.
- Champion improvements in product manufacturability through effective relationship building and design guidance.
- Build effective cross-functional relationships within local site, across business and internationally within group and suppliers.
- Continue professional development throughout your career by formal training, learning “on the job” and keeping up to date with the latest developments, which may aid performance.
What we are looking for
- Dynamics and control theory knowledge is desirable.
- A minimum of an upper second class degree in Mechanical Engineering.
- You will be professionally recognised with IMechE or equivalent. Alternatively, you must possess and be able to demonstrate that you have the UK-SPEC competencies necessary in obtaining professional recognition with the IMechE.
