Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Band 8b / Band 8a (preceptorship) principal clinical psychologist within CWP forensic services.

The successful applicant will be leading psychological input into both community services and low secure and stepdown inpatient settings providing in a diversity of work opportunities for the successful applicant.

The successful applicant will be joining an existing therapy team and MDT of highly experienced and qualified and motivated senior practitioners.

There will be robust professional and clinical supervision systems for the successful applicant within the peer group and from senior psychologists and extensive opportunities for development through CPD structures. There will be financial support to develop professional and clinical skills such as opportunities to enhance therapy modalities. There are regular opportunities to meet to discuss and plan strategic objectives for the psychological provision for the overall Trust with other senior psychologists on a formal level. There will also be close links to the other Clinical Psychologists working in the Community Mental Health Teams, Complex Care, IAPT, Forensics Services and Rehabilitation and Recovery Services and other psychologists who straddle across multiple health services.

We will consider both part-time and appropriate job shares dependent on how this fits with the needs of each service. There is also flexibility around working locations for aspects of the post.

Main duties of the job

A successful applicant will be expected to have significant experience and expertise around delivering therapy input for forensic patterns, (such as violence and sexual violence) including employing adapted therapy protocols for people with developmental disabilities.

They will need to have knowledge and experience of completing appropriate risk assessment, formulation and management processes (including the development of appropriate structured professional judgement tools). A successful applicant will have competencies in relation to liaising with and providing consultation opportunities to other services and agencies to support formulating risk and management of complexity.

To lead on the delivery of specialist clinical psychology services to service users open to Forensic Services

To provide specialist psychological assessment and therapy/treatment and interventions

To offer advice and consultation on service users’ psychological care to non-psychologist colleagues and to other, non-professional carers

To supervise assistant psychologists, trainee clinical psychologists and qualified clinical psychologists and practitioners as agreed.

To work autonomously within professional guidelines and exercise responsibility for the systematic governance of psychological practice within the service/team.

To utilise research skills for audit, policy and service development and research.

To propose and implement policy changes within the area served by the service

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Post-graduate doctoral level training in clinical psychology (or its equivalent for those trained prior to 1996) as accredited by the BPS, including specifically models of understanding human problems, clinical psychometrics and neuropsychology, two or more distinct psychological therapies and lifespan developmental psychology
  • HPC registration
Desirable criteria
  • Post-doctoral training in one or more additional specialised areas of psychological practice
  • Formal training in supervision of other psychologists
  • BPS chartered status

Knowledge & Expertise

Essential criteria
  • Skills in the use of complex methods of psychological assessment intervention and management frequently requiring sustained and intense concentration
  • Well-developed skills for communicating effectively, orally and in writing, highly technical, and clinically sensitive information to clients, their families, carers and other professional colleagues both within and outside the NHS
  • Skills in providing consultation to other professional and non-professional
Desirable criteria
  • Well-developed knowledge of the theory and practice of applied psychology and specialised psychological therapies in working with people with complex difficulties (e.g. severe MH problems; personality disorder, dual diagnoses, people with additional disabilities etc)

Experience

  • Experience of working as a qualified clinical psychologist for a number of years
