Wood Mackenzie is looking for a Principal Analyst to join its Steel Alloys division focussing on analysing the Vanadium and Niobium markets and contributing to the full range of Steel Alloy products that Wood Mackenzie provides. The role represents an opportunity to work as a leading member of Wood Mackenzie’s international steel alloys team, providing market-leading analysis and forecasting allowing our clients to make informed and confident decisions at all stages of the supply chain. In addition, the Principal Analyst will undertake ‘on-the-ground’ research at operations, refineries and end-users globally, and provide Wood Mackenzie’s market view at industry conferences.
Objective: The Principal Analyst will contribute and lead the in-house vanadium and niobium market analysis, which forms a part of the Noble Steel Alloys Outlook report and related databases. The role will also support molybdenum research. You will undertake a detailed analysis of current market trends, provide forecasts based on the wide range of data available within Wood Mackenzie’s internal models and present these findings to clients in technical reports and presentations. In addition, the role will work closely with teams covering assets, sustainability and bespoke consultancy. As a Principal Analyst, the role also has leadership responsibilities to drive the product forward, provide ad-hoc mentorship to junior analysts, assist in planning, and provide overarching thought leadership to the group.

Responsibilities:
Research
- Undertake desk-based and primary research to gather data and supply modelling relating to the production of vanadium and niobium
- Update and maintain in-house vanadium and niobium models and datasets, identifying and implementing improvements to increase analytical capability
- Provide assessments of project developments, including financial and technical analysis to determine project viability at the mining and refining stages of the supply chain
- Produce both short-term and long-term forecasts of vanadium and niobium supply, demand and pricing
- Author and contribute to industry white papers on key issues
- Liaise with other divisions, to provide a holistic approach to the product research (steel, nickel, stainless etc.)
- When required undertake bespoke market and technical research
- Develop new business for the division and explore new revenue streams
- Assist in planning and leading product developments
- Provide mentorship to junior analysts
- Drive thought leadership across Metals & Mining
Sales/Marketing/PR:
- Increase Wood Mackenzie market coverage through social media and presentations at global industry conferences and events.
- Develop and build a network of industry and media contacts to improve Wood Mackenzie’s brand and increase its public profile, it is relevant to answer requests for opinion from journalists and also to offer them good stories that we have researched and found from time to time
- Identify any advertising or sponsorship opportunities, i.e., conferences, trade press or media partnerships with other organisations
- Work with sales team to identify new potential sales opportunities, and support sales efforts, this will include travelling with the sales team when appropriate.
Conferences:
- Seek new conferences for both research and potential marketing
- Plan conference attendance within the publication schedule: Attend and speak at international industry conferences
- Promote and support with presentations Wood Mackenzie in-house events and external conferences
Consultancy:
- Assist on specific divisional consultancy projects; Support to consulting mandates regarding the vanadium and niobium industries
HR:
- Mentor and support more junior staff working on divisional reports and projects, including consultancy projects
- Identify gaps in capability and how to improve them through training, either external or internal
Market and technology monitoring (news, white papers, academic papers)
Travel for primary research and sales opportunities. Conduct around 3-4 primary research trips per year when able.
Sharing knowledge inside Wood Mackenzie
- Weekly collaboration with other analysts for ad-hoc data requests or market opinion to help analysts complement their market assessments.
Knowledge and Experience:
- The successful candidate will have substantive experience in an analytical role, including relevant market research and business advisory experience or a member of strategic planning and business insights for a metals & mining industry participant. Relevant industry knowledge of the steel sector and in-depth understanding of alloy markets and industry is required.
- You are comfortable collecting and interpreting data, articulating your findings in a clear and insightful manner. You also have a flair for written communications and confidence when presenting your insights to small and large groups.
