A highly motivated Postdoctoral Researcher looking to develop an independent research career is required to join the NDCN team in the first instance, reporting to Dr Alexander Thompson and Associate Professor Laura Parkkinen, with oversight from the IMCM Programme Manager and IMCM co-director Professor John Todd.
This post provides an exciting opportunity to join the newly established multidisciplinary Oxford-GSK Institute for Molecular & Computational Medicine (IMCM) operating within Nuffield Department of Medicine (NDM) in collaboration with Nuffield Department of Clinical Neuroscience (NDCN), Nuffield Department of Population Health (NDPH) and Department of Physiology, Anatomy and Genetics (DPAG). Researchers working under IMCM will be allocated to specific projects in the first instance, however, may be reallocated to other IMCM projects in the future appropriate to the researcher’s experience and skill set. You will be employed by the University of Oxford and must be willing to work on a cross-cutting departmental basis (currently DPAG, NDPH, NDM and NDCN) depending on scientific phasing of the IMCM projects.
You will develop assays in neurodegenerative diseases; namely TDP-43 and alpha-synuclein RT-QuIC (real-time quaking-induced conversion) or seed amplification assays (SAAs). You will employ various morphological and biochemical techniques, such as conformation stability assays, transmission electron microscope coupled (TEM) with microgold, to study TDP-43 and alpha-synuclein fibrils, and develop research questions, testing hypotheses and analyzing scientific data from a variety of sources, reviewing and refining working hypotheses as appropriate. You will manage own academic research and administrative activities, which will involve small-scale project management, to co-ordinate multiple aspects of work to meet given deadlines.
It is essential that you hold a PhD/ DPhil (or close to completion) in a relevant subject, and have demonstrable experience in amyloid chemistry and assay development/optimization, together with working knowledge of statistical programs relevant to basic research. You will have excellent communication skills, including the ability to write for publication, present results and represent the research group at meetings, and be able to conduct high quality research and produce relevant publications. It is essential that you are able to work independently, and manage own time and work to strict deadlines.
Applications for this vacancy are to be made online and you will be required to upload a supporting statement and CV as part of your online application. Your supporting statement must explain how you meet each of the selection criteria for the post using examples of your skills and experience.
This position is offered full time on a fixed term contract for 5 years in the first instance, and is funded by GSK.
Only applications received before 12 midday on Monday 30 January 2023 will be considered.
