Postdoctoral Research Assistant for the ATLAS experiment Oxford, England

University of Oxford
Full Time Oxford, England 34308 - 42155 GBP ANNUAL Today
Job description

Applications are invited for two Postdoctoral Research Assistants in Particle Physics.
The two full-time posts are each available for a fixed-term duration of 2.5 years, with an opportunity to extend subject to funding.
The place of work will be at the Denys Wilkinson Building, Keble Road, Oxford, OX1 3RH, or at CERN, Geneva, Switzerland.
The Large Hadron Collider at CERN has recently started a major physics run, offering new opportunities to explore physics at the highest energies.
The successful candidates will analyse data from the ATLAS experiment at CERN, performing precision Standard Model measurements or seeking evidence for physics beyond the Standard Model in the LHC collisions. They will also contribute to ATLAS operations and performance, with one post contributing to the development, operation and upgrade of the ATLAS detector trigger.
This will involve adapting existing and developing new scientific techniques; contributing ideas for new research projects; collaborating in the preparation of scientific reports and journal articles and occasionally present papers and posters; represent the research group at external meetings & seminars, either with other members of the group or alone; managing their own academic research and administrative activities; and carrying out collaborative projects with colleagues in partner institutions, and research groups.
Applicants should hold, or be close to the completion of, a doctorate (DPhil or PhD) in experimental particle physics or related field and ideally have a strong background in searches for heavy particles at the LHC.
Previous experience with the ATLAS or CMS experiments will be an advantage.
Candidates are expected to demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively, plan and execute research activities, and work in a team.
The post may be based in Oxford or CERN, with visits to the other site when necessary. When based in Oxford, teaching duties of up to three hours per week during University term time may be required.
Informal enquiries about this post may be made to Alan Barr, [email protected] or Claire Gwenlan, [email protected].
Only applications received promptly by 12:00 noon UK time on 11th April 2023 can be considered. Please read the “Person Specification and Job Description” before preparing your application. You will be required to upload a Curriculum Vitae, a description of research experience and interests and the names and addresses of three referees as part of your online application. In addition you should arrange for the three letters of reference to be sent to [email protected] by the closing date. Applications are acknowledged but not reference letters.
