Job Title: Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) Lead

Reports to: PBS Manager

Job Purpose

Marcus & Marcus’ PBS leads operate as part of the PBS team and work in close partnership with the PBS manager, operation managers, project managers and direct support workers teams to develop, deliver and constantly improve capable physical and psychological support environments, that:

· Are personalised, safe, kind, compassionate and respectful

· Promote trust, predictability, effective communication, engagement in meaningful relationships and activities people enjoy, skills development and independence

· Maximise choice and control

· Honour people’s likes, preferences and wishes

· Meet people’s sensory, social and emotional needs

· Meet people’s physical and mental health needs

· Promote real inclusion in the local community

Our PBS leads are working with the Project Managers, PIT champions, and senior direct support workers an essential practice leadership role, that ensure the company person-centred active support and positive behaviour support approaches are implemented to the highest standards.

Being accredited by the National Autistic Society (NAS) and the Care Quality Commission (CQC), our PBS leads must ensure that our practice meets and exceeds the best practice guidance as prescribed by NAS & CQC.

PBS leads competencies:

· Have a good understanding of learning disability and Autism, and how it affects people’s lives and their families.

· Have an in-depth understanding of the following support approaches, their tools, how do they look in practice and your role in supporting their implementation:

o Person-centred care and support

o Person-centred planning and thinking

o Person centred active support

o Positive behaviour support

o Good Autism practices

o Trauma informed care

o Capable environment

Your knowledge of Marcus & Marcus’ person-centred care and support approaches is essential for you to be able to support, coach, supervise and monitor staff team’ delivery of high standard care and support.

o Have a good understanding of what your practice leadership responsibilities are and how to fulfill them.

o Have excellent communication and social skills.

o Be able to manage a varied workload effectively.

We are looking for an experienced Positive Behavioural Support Specialist that is:

· Experienced working with clients with complex needs, ASD, challenging behaviour and Mental Health needs (Essential)

· Thorough knowledge of best practice and any legislation and regulatory requirements (Essential)

· Holds a Coaching programme i.e. Bild, APT, Redstone (Desirable)

· Functional Behaviour Assessment training (Desirable)

· Holds a Level 5 Professional Diploma is PBS (Desirable)

· Knowledgeable of values and ethical principles and how to apply these within professional practice (Essential)

· Critically reflective with the ability to analyse strengths and weaknesses to improve professional practice, problem solve at an advance level and explore alternative solution (Essential)

Responsibilities and duties:

Assessment

· To assess the service user’s needs and abilities in collaboration with the staff teams and their project managers, in order to devise person centred active support plans and PBS plans in cases of service users expressing their needs with behaviours that challenge.

· To support staff team in conducting regular service users preference assessment to tailor support to people’s likes, preferences and wishes, and to know how to motivate them to engage.

· To co-lead with project managers, person centered planning discussion with the service users and their families, to identify the way they want to live their lives, their wishes, their dreams and their fears and devise concrete and realistic actions plans to achieve their goals. (Essential Life Style, Making Action Plans, Planning Alternative Together with Hope-PATH)

· To conduct Functional Behaviour Assessments of behaviours that challenge, foundation of function-based PBS plan development.

· To review and analyse incident reports, discuss an understanding of the factors that seem to have played a role in the distress the service user experienced, and suggest strategies to prevent proactively such incidents in the future and reactive management strategies in case of re-occurrence.

· Use and promote the use of relevant accurate data to inform decision making around support.

Support plan design:

Collaboratively with direct support staff teams, their manager, the service users when possible (with the right level of help), and with their families (and other stakeholders e.g. SaLT, OT, psychologist), lead the co-development of:

o Person centred plans

o Person centred active support plans

o PBS plans

Support plans implementation, monitoring and review:

· Lead the co-development of support plans implementation process in collaboration with the staff teams, their project managers, the service user’s family and the service users themselves as much as possible.

· Lead the training of the direct support workers and the service user’s family in implementing the support plans, following the 3 stages competency evidence-based training model: 1- theory, 2- modelling and role play, 3- coaching in vivo, with positive constructive feedback.

· 3- Lead with the project managers, regular person-centered planning, active support and PBS meetings with the staff teams, the service user’s families and the service users themselves, when possible, to review and discuss the efficacy of support plans at meeting targeted outcomes and making the relevant modifications.

Service user’s skills development:

· In collaboration with the service users as much as possible, their families and their support staff team and based on a skill assessment, develop skills development plans, with active support and/or teaching protocols.

· Train the support staff team and the families to implement the active support technics and teaching protocols.

Training:

· Marcus and Marcus PBS leads have a central role in the training of direct support workers and their managers in various domains of support. PBS leads deliver standard general Marcus and Marcus training, and also have the responsibility to develop and deliver person specific trainings.

· To follow the 3 stages competency training model, PBS leads, in collaboration with the project managers, have to provide feedback to direct support worker implementation of the good practices they have learnt in stage 1 and 2. This can be done in person, during direct observation session, or remotely via social media, after reviewing video recording demonstrating the skills they have learnt.

Practice leadership:

· To build and nurture positive rapport with the direct support staff and their managers, primary receiver of PBS lead’s support.

· To build and nurture positive rapport with the service users and their family, whilst remembering to support them developing trusting, rewarding, enduring positive relationships primarily with their direct support staff and project managers. Direct support staff and their project managers are the ones who are present most of the time, delivering the support.

· To observe, listen and try to understand staff’ team dynamics and their needs to implement support plans and perform their job to the highest standards.

· To model to direct support staff the good practices devised in the support plans.

· To conduct formal and informal direct support worker observation and provide positive constructive feedback.

· To work in close partnership with project managers and operation managers.

· To conduct audits of frontline support practice to ensure that the support environment provided meets the requirements of capable environment.

· To assist in conducting debriefs with the staff teams after significant incidents.

Transitions:

To support the project managers and operation managers in facilitating successful transition, sharing responsibility around transition planning, in collaboration with relatives, professionals and support staff and the service users themselves as much as possible:

o Transition into Marcus & Marcus services of new service users.

o Transition of an existing Marcus & Marcus’ service user in a new accommodation.

Staff induction:

· To support project managers in inducting new direct support workers into Marcus & Marcus company.

· To support project managers in inducting existing Marcus & Marcus direct support workers into a new or different project.

Quality assurance:

· To ensure that all documentation, support plans, risk assessments, personal and intimate care protocols, medical protocols for the service user under your responsibility is up to date and accurate.

· To actively participate in trainings and in your own personal development as identified within the supervision and appraisal process.

· To ensure good and safe practices in all activities relating to the service users’ care and support, following the company care and support approaches, its processes and procedures, which guide, monitor and continually promote the improvement of the services we provide.

Please note that as part of your role, flexibility is essential, and you may be required to support teams in various projects, at various locations. The travel cost will be reimbursed by the Company.
