Job description

About the Role:

This is an exciting opportunity to apply your data and analytics skills in portfolio management and trading. We are looking for an Applied Data Scientist who wants to utilize their skills in financial markets. We are offering the opportunity to become a portfolio manager and trader where you can use your skills to work with the Markets team at Brightwell on quantitative investment strategies, tactical and strategic trade ideas, and other portfolio activities. You will join a front-office team of portfolio managers and traders who will help you to develop new skills.

You should have some experience with data analysis and programming. This can be from work in the private sector or from academic research. More importantly, you should have an academic background with a solid foundation in data analysis, statistics or econometrics. Applied data expertise is more important than experience in financial markets and portfolio management. We can teach and you will learn from your colleagues.

About the Team:

You will join a small team of portfolio managers and traders who truly work as one team. As a team we have a very wide skill set ranging from trading and portfolio management to quant skills and programming. You will have the opportunity to work with and learn from all of us. You will find an intellectually stimulating environment with smart and dedicated teammates.

Our firm is large in assets (£40bn+) but very lean. You will interact with senior investment managers and the CIO. You will also work with other functions, such as our IT, Operations and Data Management teams. You will find that you are not just a cog in the machine. You can influence our team but also other functions around you.

Key Requirements

  • Education: Master’s or higher with core exposure to econometrics, statistics, or data science
  • Experience with Python and relevant modules
  • Good scripting and programming skills
  • Good applied statistical skills, for example econometrics, regression analysis, testing, or strong understanding of distributions and probabilities
  • Pays attention to detail and is diligent
  • Understanding of markets and derivatives would be an asset but is not a prerequisite

Your profile

  • Exceptional analytics aptitude strengthened by a quantitative background from a leading university
  • Some experience working with data in the private sector or academic research
  • Understanding of or strong interest in systematic investment strategies and portfolio management
  • Experience with portfolio construction, options or fixed income is a plus
  • You are interested in learning and to go beyond your current comfort zone
