Job description
The City of York Council wishes to appoint a Political Assistant to the Liberal Democrat Group which is the main Opposition to a new Labour Administration following the recent May local elections. We are looking for an enthusiastic self-starter with experience of supporting political parties or working in political environment with good communication, research skills and the ability to communicate succinctly and with a wide range of different audiences. Knowledge of political campaigns and local government would be a distinct advantage.
This vacancy is available as a secondment opportunity for internal candidates. Permission must be sought from your current line manager before applying for a secondment opportunity.
The post holder will work closely with the Group Leader, who is the Leader of the Opposition, and members of the Group, including those who operate as lead Opposition Spokespersons. The postholder will be expected to:
- Identify current and forthcoming local, regional and national issues of political relevance
- Prepare press releases and liaise with the media
- Understand the role of social media in an age of modern communication
- Undertake specific research
- Provide written and oral briefings on emerging issues
This is a politically restricted post governed by the Local Government and Housing Act 1989 and Local Government Restrictions Regulations 1990. As designated politically restricted officers, employees will not be allowed to undertake certain activities. Please refer to the guidance attached for further information. In addition, the role is time-limited under the Local Government and Housing act 1989 and will terminate at or before the end of the day in 2027 on which the Council holds its Annual Meeting (although the post may be extended for a further period depending on election results).
Hybrid working arrangements are available for this role. Each role at CYC is different and your working arrangements will be determined based on the requirements of the role and in collaboration with you and your needs as part of the recruitment process. Your contractual location will be the designated council office for your team.
