Job description 1
Do you want a career which contributes to a more sustainable environment? Then we have the perfect opportunity.

We are looking for a Planning Advisor to join the Greater Manchester, Merseyside and Cheshire (GMMC) Sustainable Places team. You will be on the frontline engaging with Local Planning Authorities, developers and consultants to ensure that the large amounts of growth and regeneration planned over the next 15 years are delivered in a way which protects and enhances the environment for future generations.

In GMMC we have some of the biggest environmental challenges: multiple main rivers, a large coastline and a lot of historically contaminated land. We need a highly motivated, enthusiastic person to take on these challenges and deliver positive outcomes for the environment.
The successful candidates will have sound knowledge of the planning system and goals around sustainable growth. They will be clear and effective at communicating and building relationships. In turn these Planning Advisors will be integral to a diverse, exciting portfolio of work.

Accountabilities will include:
  • Responding to Local Plan and Development Management Work for a number of Local Planning Authorities;
  • Participating in internal projects / working groups;
  • Engaging and influencing our local planning decision-makers around growth and infrastructure.

These roles offer opportunities to deepen professional planning knowledge and develop additional project management, innovation, leadership skills. We will also explore the possibility of apprenticeships and other career progression options should these be appealing.

Responding to incidents is a central part of what we do. You are required to have an incident role and make yourself available to respond to incidents or provide business continuity support during an incident. This may attract an additional payment and full training is given. We will work with you to find a role that suits your interests and circumstances.
The team 1
Sustainable Places is a positive and hardworking team which works with both multiple stakeholders to deliver EA2025 goals. We work closely with technical teams to evaluate environmental data, evidence and assessments associated with planning consultations. Externally we engage with Councils, water companies, developers and Defra partners.
We influence strategies across the business and develop relationships with external stakeholders.

The multi-functional nature of this role presents an excellent opening to a career in the Environment Agency.
Experience/skills required 1
You will enjoy the challenge of working within a busy team, with tight deadlines. In addition to this, you will be able to demonstrate some or all of the following:

  • Knowledge of environmental issues relevant to the Environment Agency and/or the Environment Agency’s planning remit
  • Knowledge of the UK planning system and relevant legislation particularly relating to local plans/supporting evidence, major growth projects and development management work-streams
  • Awareness of the political framework we work within
  • Good communication and networking skills
  • Good people and project management skills
  • An ability to work flexibly responding to competing demands in a challenging but rewarding environment
  • A positive caring attitude with an ability to contribute to a diverse and inclusive work culture
