PIU is currently located on Clayton, the Neuromedical Ward at the Princess Royal Hospital in Haywards Heath.
However the unit will be moving to the new 3 T’s building in June 2023….
The Trust is undergoing a physical transformation with a brand new hospital that has been built on Royal Sussex County Hospital site, opening in 2023. The Neurology service will be moving into Level 10 of the new Louisa Martindale Building. Our team are looking forward to this opportunity of transferring and expanding our services into a modern environment with the latest technology and facilities.
As a team we are committed to supporting our nurses in professional development by completing neurological specific competencies. We support all nurses in achieving the career in which they desire. This post gives the unique opportunity to a newly qualified nurse or existing experienced nurse to gain specialist knowledge in care of a neurological patient and to consolidate and extend existing clinical skills.
The planned investigation unit (PIU) is a busy day case unit that sits alongside Clayton ward: a neurological ward. The unit is open 07.30-18.00, Monday to Friday. The PIU provides a variety of specialist infusions and subcutaneous injections. They include Immunoglobulin (IVIG), Ocrelizumab, Rituximab and Natalizumab. We care for patients with long term neurological conditions, of which 80% who attend PIU have a diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis. The treatments provide aim to slow disease progression. We also care for those attending the unit for investigations which include Lumbar punctures, specialist scans and blood tests.
We are looking for a driven, ambitious and autonomous Band 5 Nurse that is committed to delivering exceptional care for a diverse range of clients with long-term neurological conditions on PIU. We accept and fully support newly qualified or experienced nurses. The successful candidate will receive full training however experience in cannulation and venepuncture would be useful.

Clinical
1. Is responsible for the assessment, planning and implementation of care and assists in the interpretation of data relevant to the patient’s condition and progress.
2. Assists in the identification of patient problems and needs with the patient, their carers, senior nursing staff and other staff as appropriate.
3. Identifies the priorities of care for patients.
4. Identifies realistic goals for patients in care plans.
5. Gives skilled care to patients and provides support to their carers.
6. Administers drugs and treatments as prescribed according to the NMC guidelines and the Trust’s Guidelines for the Safe and Secure Handling of Medicines.
7. Changes care plans and goals according to evaluation and discussion with the multidisciplinary team.
8. Demonstrates an understanding and skill in the care and management of the critically ill patient.
9. Works closely with all members of the care team to ensure the needs of patients are met.
10. Demonstrates proficiency in the care of CVP lines and the administration of IV Therapy in accordance with Trust Policy.
11. Participate in the smooth and effective care planning for patients.
12. Maintains accurate documentation to facilitate the continuity of care for patients.
13. Ensures that documentation is completed and communicated to relevant teams in timely fashion.
14. Liaise with nursing and clerical staff to enable efficient administration of the PIU’s work.
