Applications are invited for the above post of Consultant in Geriatric Medicine in the Care of the Elderly Team, based at Worthing Hospital part of the University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust.

The successful candidate will join a highly regarded Department with a regional reputation for excellence.

Care of the Elderly is an area that is only expected to grow in the coming years and as such we are looking to recruit a dynamic and motivated workforce to help develop and improve the services we currently offer in the Trust. This is a time of real excitement as we look to build a team that can work with our key stakeholders in developing new pathways. This role in particular would focus on ward based elderly care, ensuring the best possible outcomes for patients whilst also contributing to improving mortality, patient experience, length of stay etc. However as a team we are looking to develop further community work, and enhance our SDEC, virtual wards and front door frailty services. We also welcome an appropriate specialist interest. The post holder will work with the multi-disciplinary team and Physician colleagues across the Trust.

We are in the process of implementing Healthrota software for an annualised rota within the department, which increases flexibility while still working within the agreed number of PA’s.

The main duties of the role would be to support and develop the elderly inpatient service, at Worthing Hospital. Working with colleagues at our other sites in St Richards, Chichester, Princess Royal in Haywards Heath and the Royal Sussex County in Brighton. Worthing has been nationally recognised as providing excellent elderly medicine pathways and we want to build upon our strengths and improve our performance in other areas to become nationally recognised as an all-round excellent care provider achieving the best outcome for our patients.

The post holder will:

  • Support the ward inpatient team, Supervising the ward multidisciplinary team. Have responsibility for inpatients at University Hospital Sussex at the Worthing site, delivering daily ward input as needed.
  • Provide appropriate cover for patients admitted under the care of another paired consultant during the absence on leave of colleagues
  • Provide education to the wider MDT as part of the Care of the Elderly educational program.
  • There is responsibility for general professional training of the junior members of the department and contributing to the training of nurses and other staff and participating in the activities of the Health Education Centre including Medical and Clinical Audit.
The successful candidate will be included on the on-call rota for elderly medicine and with the other consultants in CotE, currently on a 1 in 7 basis.
