The Vacancy

As a staff photographer you will be taking pictures of the highest quality got the PA Wire and from time to time, other editorial departments, for use by a wide range of customers, including newspapers, magazines, TV, and internet websites.


What you’ll be doing:


As a Photographer your main responsibilities will be:

  • Being aware of the news, sports, and showbiz agenda nationally and locally and understand how it influences the PA Wire’s coverage plans.
  • Taking photographs and shoot video at events across all genres including news, sports, and entertainment.
  • Speedy delivery of key moments from live events directly from camera.
  • When required – editing the pictures and preparation of images for transmission using Photo Mechanic and Adobe Photoshop.
  • Gathering enough information to write adequate caption to an agreed metadata standard.
  • Transmitting them to the remote editor, straight to the wire, or the picture desk.
  • Liaising with PA reporters and other PA photographers to find upcoming events and ensuring that the Forward Planning Team has the right details.
  • Editing images captured by colleagues to support the picture editing operation.
  • Ability to over assignments provided to you, to work with a reporter to cover a story, and to find and deliver your own picture stories.


Who you’ll be:


We want to make sure you’re set for success so the key skills we’re looking for in the role are below.

  • Expert knowledge in the use of equipment.
  • A first class understanding of what makes a good image.
  • The ability to cover a range of events and shoot varying styles of photography which support the broad offering of the PA Media Group.
  • An understanding of the importance of video and the ability to shoot in sequences, record sound and edit and transmit material from assignments.
  • Knowledge of methods used to prove and transmit photographs including Adobe Photoshop, FTP and Photo Mechanic.
  • The ability to edit strong imagery quickly and efficiently, while adding relevant IPTC metadata.
  • Strong understanding of post-production using Adobe Photoshop or Lightroom – demonstrating crops and colour level adjustments.
  • Familiarity with flash and filters, and when and when not to use them.
  • Ability to communicate effectively across all levels.
  • Experience of working in a commercial environment where image sales are a crucial business requirement.
  • A keen interest in current affairs and working knowledge of media law and the Editors Code of Conduct.
  • Ability to operate under pressure and to prioritise workload and maintains a keen eye for detail.
  • Good communication skills on telephone and in person.
