* WE ARE LOOKING FOR EITHER A PHLEBOTOMIST WORKING 12-16 HOURS PER WEEK (£11 - 11.50 PER HOUR) WORKING TUESDAY, THURSDAY, FRIDAY, OR A HEALTHCARE ASSISTANT WORKING 12 - 20 HOURS PER WEEK (UP TO £12.50 PER HOUR DEPENDING ON EXPERIENCE), WORKING TUESDAY, THURSDAY, FRIDAY (PLUS ONE OTHER DAY DETERMINED BY THE APPLICANT) *
The HCA role will require the applicant to work one Saturday per quarter 8.45am - 5pm as overtime. The HCA will also need to have the Care Certificate - if you do not have this but have the required skills and experience, we would be happy for you to complete this in-house.
PHLEBOTOMIST MAIN DUTIES
The following are the core responsibilities of the Phlebotomist. There may be, on occasion, a requirement to carry out other tasks; this will be dependent upon factors such as workload and staffing levels:
a. Obtaining patient consent for the collection of a blood sample
b. Performing venepuncture in accordance with practice protocols
c. Maintaining accurate patient records on EMIS Web
d. The correct labelling, packaging and storing of samples
e. Effective use of the specimen log, resolving any discrepancies
f. Ensuring samples are sent to the laboratory in a timely manner
g. Maintaining an effective liaison with the laboratory staff at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital
h. Working collaboratively with the nursing team, seeking guidance when necessary for patient related matters
i. Restocking of rooms
j. Ordering stock from central stores (via PCSE)
k. ECGs, blood pressure checks and urinalysis (once trained)
l. Checking and logging fridge temperatures
m. Carrying out INR testing
n. Ensure competency with EMIS, Teamnet, NHS mail and Bluestream mandatory training
HCA MAIN DUTIES
The following are the core responsibilities of the Healthcare Assistant. There may be, on occasion, a requirement to carry out other tasks; this will be dependent upon factors such as workload and staffing levels:
a. INR* and monthly calibration audits
b. Support the practice nurse with health promotion programmes
c. Carry out baseline observations such as pulse oximitery, blood pressure, temperature and pulse rate, recording findings accurately
d. Facilitate routine and Home BP monitoring, advising patients accordingly
e. Undertake wound care, dressings and other clinical tasks as required
f. Support the practice nurse with the management of chronic disease clinics, including diabetic foot checks
g. Carry out BMI checks as directed
h. Act as a chaperone as required
i. Undertake venepuncture
j. When trained, administer flu and Covid vaccinations
k. When trained, administer B12 injections under PSD
l. When trained, carry out ear irrigation under the supervision of the practice nurse
m. Carry out ECGs as requested
n. Ensure specimens are recorded and ready for onward transportation during each clinic
o. Provide support during minor operations and coil clinics as required
p. Ensure all clinical rooms are adequately stocked and prepared weekly
q. Ensure fridges are cleaned routinely in accordance with extant guidance and daily temperature checks are recorded
r. Ensure sharps bins replaced in accordance with the organisation’s IPC policy
s. Deliver opportunistic health promotion where appropriate
t. Ensure competency with EMIS, Teamnet, NHS mail and Bluestream mandatory training

Part-time hours: 12-20 per week
Salary: £11.00-£12.50 per hour
