Job description

We are looking for an enthusiastic person to join our expanding Phlebotomy team.

Basic phlebotomy or clinical experience is preferred but not essential.
This position will be based at EITHER Gloucester Royal Hospital and Cheltenham General Hospital working throughout the trust covering the wards and outpatients in the Edward Jenner Unit, West Block out patients, and covering oncology clinics

The post Holder will be expected to participate in the provisions of a continuous weekend and Bank Holiday Service on a rota basis in addition to their contracted hours

(Required to work 1 in 3 weekends plus a minimum of 2 bank holidays)

PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Daily pressures and stresses of high workload under constraints of time.
  • Handling potentially infectious blood with the inherent risk of needlestick injury.
  • Handling potentially infectious body fluids etc with unpleasant smells/odours together with the risk associated in handling hazardous chemicals.
  • Working on wards where increased levels of PPE are often required due to increased infection control precautions.
  • Wearing PPE (Eye Protection, Masks providing different levels of protection, disposable aprons and non-latex gloves) for long periods of time.
  • Making repetitive movements including bending.
  • Working in hot conditions with protective clothing.
  • Dealing with distressed relatives/patients.
  • Dangers and responsibilities associated with lone workers.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to overcome barriers to communication caused by language, mental or physical impairment.
  • Practical experience of Phlebotomy practices including the selection of the optimum site and method for blood collection.
  • Specialist knowledge of the wide range of Pathology blood and urine tests (in excess of 300) and the specific laboratory requirements relating to their collection, storage and transport.
  • Satisfactory levels of literacy and numeracy with good attention to detail.
  • Physical fitness is essential, including the ability to lift and carry within current Manu

KEY RESULT AREAS

Specific:
  • Collect blood samples from patients by venepuncture, taking into consideration any specific requirements relating to the patient’s physical/mental needs, and ensuring that the patient’s informed consent is obtained before proceeding.
  • Decide how or whether to proceed with venepuncture depending on individual circumstances, without the necessity to obtain managerial consent.
  • Attend specialist clinics and liase closely with the Clinical Team to provide a prompt and efficient service.
  • Triage outpatients to prioritise urgent tests thereby enhancing the patient experience by reducing waiting times.
  • Ensure the prompt delivery of blood samples and appropriate, accurate documentation to the Laboratory.
  • Liase with Pharmacy to co-ordinate Clinics for Drug Monitoring Schemes (Clozaril) and ensure that adequate stocks of sample kits are ordered and prepared in advance.
  • Check and maintain stocks of Phlebotomy requisites to ensure continuity of supply and adequate stock rotation where items have an expiry date.
  • Provide routine advice and information to patients regarding procedures for the collection of urine and other specimens, including health and safety precautions concerning chemicals used in sample preservation.
  • Maintain security of work areas and equipment and ensure that they are kept clean and hygienic.
  • Refer observations and queries to the Phlebotomy Services Manager.
