Post title: Phlebotomist

Responsible to: Practice Manager

Accountable to: The Partners

Hours of work: Variable, 16 hours per week

Job Summary:

In this role you will be working under the supervision of our Practice Nurse Team in accordance with the practices guidelines and protocols.

The post-holder will be responsible for performing venepuncture to obtain blood samples from patients, only as a result of a direct referral from a GP, Nurse Practitioner or outpatient clinic, or as part of the patients annual review.

Main Activities, Duties and Responsibilities

  • Ensuring that the patient is as comfortable and relaxed as possible and confirming their agreement to the collection of a blood sample.
  • Collection of sample(s) of blood in accordance with training and procedures.
  • Ensuring samples are stored in appropriate containers.
  • Accurate, legible labelling of all samples to confirm patient identity.
  • Checking patient identification against GP/nurse request and confirming with patient whenever possible.
  • Recording collection of blood sample in patient record in accordance with practice procedure.
  • Ensuring that samples are dispatched to the appropriate laboratories in a timely fashion.
  • Ensuring that anomalies are reported to a senior member of staff.
  • Notifying the GP/nurse of any significant patient issues.
  • Liaising with and assisting members of the administrative team.

Areas of Additional Responsibility:

  • The monitoring of fridge temperatures when required.
  • Ensuring that there is adequate stock in all clinical rooms.

Research and Audit:

  • Participate in clinical GMS audit projects.
  • Participate in Quality Improvement Projects and Audits.

Flexibility:

  • Provide cover for both annual and sick leave.

  • In the course of seeking treatment, patients entrust with us, or allow us to gather, sensitive information in relation to their health and other matters. They do so in confidence and have the right to expect that staff will respect their privacy and act appropriately.
  • In the performance of the duties outlined in this job description, the post-holder may have access to confidential information relating to patients and their carers, practice staff and other healthcare workers. They may also have access to information relating to the practice as a business organisation. All such information, from any source, is to be regarded as strictly confidential.
  • Information relating to patients, carers, colleagues, other healthcare workers or the business of the practice may only be divulged to authorised persons in accordance with the practice policies and procedures relating to confidentiality and the protection of personal and sensitive data.

Personal / Professional Development:

The post holder will participate in any training programme implemented by the practice as part of this employment, such training to include:

  • Participation in an annual individual performance review, including taking responsibility for maintaining a record of own personal and/or professional development.
  • Taking responsibility for own development, learning and performance and demonstrating skills and activities to others who are undertaking similar work. Your practice is expected to be evidence based.
  • Experience and/or qualifications relevant to your duties as outlined in your job description.
  • Demonstrate commitment to future academic and clinical training to advance professional practice.
  • Actively participate in appropriate practice and nurse meetings.
  • Where appropriate, you are responsible for maintaining professional registration and are expected to provide membership renewal evidence to the Practice Manager.

Health and Safety:

The post-holder will implement and lead on a full range of promotion and management of their own and others’ health and safety and infection control as defined in the practice health and safety and infection control policies. This will include, but is not limited to:

  • Using security systems within the workplace.
  • Awareness and implementation of national infection control guidelines.
  • Responsible for the correct and safe management of specimens, including collection, handling, labelling, storage and transport.
  • Identifying and managing risks involved in work related activities.
  • Making effective use of training to update knowledge and skills.
  • Monitoring practice facilities and equipment in relation to infection control and escalate any concerns.
  • Safe management of sharps, including storage and disposal.
  • Maintain working areas, ensuring that they are tidy, clean, sterile and free from hazards.
  • Actively reporting any concerns immediately once recognised.
  • Undertaking infection control training.
  • Waste management.
  • Spillage control procedure.
  • Decontamination control procedures.

The post holder will:

  • Apply practice policies, standards and guidance.
  • Discuss with other members of the team how the policies, standards and guidelines will affect their own work.
  • Participate in audits where appropriate.

Other Terms:

Probationary Period:
There will be a three-month period of mutual assessment, during which time the period of notice will be one week on either side. This probationary period may be extended at the discretion of the Practice.

Notice Period:
Once the probationary period has been successfully completed, there will be a three month notice period of notice on either side to terminate the employment.

Annual Leave and Study Leave:
Annual leave entitlement will be up to 33 days, pro-rata, per year plus bank holidays, this is dependent on length of service.

Time off to attend relevant training courses and updates will be approved in line with the practice policy.

Hours of Work:
Your hours of work will be agreed and detailed in your contract. The post holder will be expected to work the hours needed to fulfil the needs of the Practice, which might at times include working longer or unsociable hours.

Pension Scheme:
Entrance into the NHS Pension Scheme is automatic unless the post-holder selects to opt out of the scheme. This is contributory scheme by both employee and employer. There is no alternative scheme available.

The above list of duties is not exhaustive, and the post-holder will be required to undertake such tasks as may be reasonably expected within the scope and the grading of the post.
