You will need to hold a recognised Pharmacy Technician qualification (BTEC in Pharmaceutical Sciences, NVQ level 3 or equivalent) and be a technician registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council. We are recruiting Pharmacy Technicians ideally with hospital experience, but welcome applications from community technicians.

Your role as an Medicines Safety Technician will involve supporting the trust with the safe use of medication. Ensuring pharmacy provide high quality, effective pharmacy care to service users across the mental health inpatient and community settings. You will work closely with both the wider pharmacy team and the integrated multidisciplinary ward teams to develop new ways of working to improve medicines safety and medicines optimisation.

We are looking to appoint highly dynamic, committed, and self-motivated pharmacy technicians who can work in a fast-paced environment with our pharmacy team and work towards becoming an Accredited Checking Pharmacy Technician. The person will work alongside the Medicines Safety Officer to support trust wide safe use of medicines. You will be supporting in investigating medication incidents and promoting learning from mistakes.

We are looking to recruit to a band 4 or 5 dependent on experience (please see job description for full details) and will indicate on interview the band relevant to the experience indicated.

The Pharmacy Department is a forward thinking and progressive department seeking to expand our current team as we develop a patient focused and modern hospital pharmacy service to the Trust while constantly looking at ways to further improve our service.

We understand the importance of great team working and have strong links with other disciplines within and around the trust. The patient is at the Centre of all that we do, and we aim to provide a pharmacy service that has medicine Optimisation as key.

SHSC has EPMA (electronic prescribing and medicines administrations) throughout the trust In-patient sites.

The following represent a broad outline of tasks the post holder will be expected to perform in achieving their key result areas. These are not intended as a fixed list of duties. The post holder will, under the direction of the Chief Pharmacist, Senior Pharmacist and Senior Technicians, perform whatever duties are reasonably necessary to achieve the job purpose and the overall safe provision of pharmacy services throughout the Trust:

  • Work alongside the Medicines Safety Officer (MSO) to support the Trust with the safe use of medicines.
  • To promote best practice and support changes to medicine guidelines within the Trust.
  • To contribute to an efficient and accurate pharmacy service to SHSC NHS Trust.
  • Support with the daily management of the dispensary.
  • A requirement to be confident and able to work with service users, carers, and healthcare professionals internally and other organisations to ensure the service users are safe with their medicines.
  • Under the direction of the Chief Pharmacist, Deputy Chief Pharmacist and the Senior Pharmacy Technician the post holder will perform whatever duties are reasonably necessary to achieve the job purpose and overall safe provision of pharmacy services throughout the trust.

Promote Medicines Safety throughout the Trust
  • Assist the MSO to ensure complete and accurate reporting of medication incidents.
  • Work in collaboration with other health professionals to promote reporting of and learning from, medication error incidents in the Trust.
  • Work with the MSO to implement and monitor action plans to ensure that lessons learnt from medicines incidents have resulted in the implementation of improved procedures across the Trust.
  • Assist in the coordination of Medicines Management audits in conjunction with the Clinical Effectiveness Team and the MSO.
  • Assist the MSO to respond to requests for information on medication error and incidents reports.
  • Work in collaboration with other health professionals to review and analyse Trust medicines incident reports to ensure data quality for local and national reporting.
  • Assist the MSO with the organisation of Medicines Safety Group agendas, act as professional secretary in the absence of the MSO and take minutes during meetings if administrative support is not available.
  • Support the dissemination of medication safety communications from NHS England and the MHRA throughout the Trust.
  • Support and in some cases Lead in the Trust with training needs related to pharmacy.
  • Contribute to relevant pharmacy and medicines optimisation bulletins to promote medicines safety, effective prescribing, and best practice in medicines management.
  • Assist the MSO with investigations into medication incidents as required.
  • When required, deputise for the MSO, and attend and contribute to relevant Trust meetings.
  • Inform the MSO of the identification of any significant high-risk processes or incidents within Medicines Management.
  • Assist the MSO with the preparation, analysis, and reporting of clinical audits, as and when required.
  • To visit inpatient and outpatient settings to undertake medication audits and reviews.
Dispensary

The following tasks are performed in conjunction with other Pharmacy Technicians Band 5
  • Under the direction of the Senior Technician, plan rotas for the technical pharmacy team e.g., holidays, phlebotomy, top-up.
  • Monitor and update information systems i.e., COSHH file and H&S check list.
  • Monitor and maintain the provision and replenishment of emergency trays.
  • Maintain the stock holding information is correct and up to date.
Other Duties
  • Provide safe and effective supply of pharmaceuticals to units within SHSC and other designated units outside the Trust.
  • If eligible, and subject to appropriate training, to undertake accuracy checking of prescriptions.
  • Undertake any other duties which may be reasonably required for the provision of pharmaceutical services to the Trust.
  • Participate in departmental systems of supervision and peer review.
  • Participate in the systems to ensure CPD.
  • Support developments in the service under the direction of the senior pharmacy team.
  • Attend meeting as allocated by the senior pharmacy team.
