Job description

Job Introduction

We are looking for a Wing Pharmacy Technician to join our wonderful team of pharmacists and pharmacy technicians at HMP Chelmsford, who is currently registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council. We will provide full induction to the prison pharmacy system so you can easily transition from community or hospital background into the health and justice system.

As the Wing Pharmacy Technician, you will work on a wing/ward environment where you will be responsible for the administration of medication to patients from secure medication hatches and the associated medication management activities, including audits and stock checks under the direction of the the Pharmacist Manager.

Work pattern, Monday – Friday 07:00 to 18:00 weekdays, weekends vary

4 shifts per week - covering 40 hours over a 8 week rota

About our prisons service:

We operate round-the-clock, nurse-led healthcare including prisoner screening on arrival and all primary care such as minor surgery, in-patient units, and prescribing. We also coordinate a wide range of other service providers, such as GP practices, to provide seamless care.

The safety of our team and the people we look after, particularly the most vulnerable, is our priority and we work closely with prison management. We also maximise the amount of ‘wing-based’ care given, which not only helps us to reduce risk posed by moving prisoners, but also helps improve waiting times and reduce the number of missed appointments.

Our motivated teams are driven by our belief that if you are a prisoner, you should receive same level of healthcare that you would in the community. We know that improving prisoners’ short and long-term health reduces their likelihood of reoffending.

Main Responsibilities

Once trained and confident, you will be expected to work autonomously within our standard operating procedures and:

  • Undertake provision of a medicine’s administration service to the patients from secure medication hatches
  • Provide, in conjunction with the appropriate Clinical practitioners, a wing technician medicine management service on allocated wings i.e. medication reconciliation
  • Assist in the delivery of cost-effective prescribing, the medicines optimisation strategy and management of medication budgets
  • Promote safe pharmacy practice within the prison including providing advice and training to patients and staff
The Ideal Candidate

  • Qualified with an NVQ Level 3, BTEC or equivalent
  • Registered Pharmacist Technician with current General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) membership
