Job description

You will be rotating in the Dispensary and stores Department to provide a service at ward level, topping up ward stock and to dispense prescriptions to Outpatient and Inpatient areas.

The Pharmacy Department at Aintree University Hospital are expanding their team and are looking for several enthusiastic, self-motivated personable to join the friendly, dynamic forward thinking team.

You must be willing to work towards achieving specific units of an NVQ level 2 in Pharmacy Services which is required for the post.

No qualifications or experience required.

Retail pharmacy assistants more than welcome to apply.

Full training will be given.

You will need to possess excellent communication skills, be self-motivated and willing to develop with new ways of working. Attention to detail is important and you must be able to work as part of a team but also able to demonstrate initiative and work in a professional and timely manner. You will need to be able to work well under pressure and have a flexible approach. Computer literacy is required although appropriate training on Pharmacy Systems will be provided.

1) To carry out dispensing of prescriptions, including unlicensed drugs, inpatient and out-patient prescriptions in accordance with the agreed safe systems of work practice.

2) To assist in routine duties in the dispensary including maintenance of stock levels, checking expiry dates and ensuring a tidy work environment.

3) To participate in ensuring the efficient running of the dispensary, including sending and receiving prescriptions via the air – tube and using the prescription tracker software system.

4) To undertake basic patient counselling in the out-patient area of the pharmacy in accordance with pharmacy procedures and under the supervision of a pharmacist or technician.

5) To provide a ‘top-up’ service for stock items held on wards and departments, including checking stock levels and placing newly ordered items into stock.

6) To process orders using the Pharmacy JAC computer system.

7) To recycle unwanted medicines back into pharmacy as part of the continuous improvement program

8) To input data into the pharmacy computer system as necessary and to produce information such as computerised picking lists.

9) To produce and transmit orders using computerised systems.

10) To assist in the receipt, storage and issue of pharmaceutical products including the maintenance of manual and computerised records.

11) To undertake, under appropriate supervision, routine procedures connected with the preparation and packing of pharmaceutical products, including aseptic techniques.

12) To assemble CPR drug boxes in accordance with Trust and department procedures.

13) To observe the recommendations contained in the Guide to Good Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Practice and its supplements and to assist in ensuring that work carried out in the department is in accordance with these and any other recommendations which may be issued from time to time by the Department of Health or Medicines Inspectorate.

14) To observe the regulations in respect of the Health and Safety at Work Act and Data Protection Act.

15) To assist in maintaining reasonable stock levels, in accordance with the policies that are in force and to assist in ensuring correct storage and turnover of stock to maintain quality and potency.

16) To attend appropriate training courses for Assistants, to encourage other staff to undertake further training and to participate in such training schemes as necessary to keep relevant pharmaceutical clinical and technical knowledge up to date.

17) To participate in Saturday, Sunday, Bank Holiday and late night duties as is considered appropriate by the Chief Pharmacist or other Senior Manager.

18) To participate in ward based stock audits under the direction of the Dispensary Manager or Senior Stores Technician.

19) To co-operate in the operation and development of computerised systems of stock control and medical specialty costing.

20) To act as a role model for student technicians and other members of technical and support staff.

21) To provide induction and training of student technicians, assistant technical officers and any other relevant members of the pharmacy team.

22) To participate in pharmacy objectives set by the Trust, the National Patient Safety Agency, the Commission for Healthcare Audit and Inspection, the Department of Health (including the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulation Agency) and others to meet clinical governance targets, develop patient care, improve clinical outcomes and ensure compliance with all standards expected for hospital pharmacy services and the interface between primary and secondary care.

23) To undertake Continuing Professional Development in order to keep pharmaceutical clinical and technical knowledge current and ensure best practice and be compliant with mandatory training.

24) To answer telephone and face to face queries of a routine or basic technical nature from a wide range of staff groups, either in the pharmacy or on the ward, and refer appropriate queries to the relevant member of the pharmacy team when necessary.

25) To liaise with various members of the pharmacy team and ward staff when solving supply problems and ensuring the best service to patients
