Dimensions
The Open Pit supervisor will plan and organize a 27-plus-person crew to achieve safe production budgeted targets. They are responsible to supervise Shovel Operators, Drillers, Equipment Operators, Truck Drivers, Labourers, and contractors. They report to the Open Pit General Foreperson.
Purpose
The purpose of the role is to plan and organize a 27-plus-person crew to achieve safe production budgeted targets. They will promote open pit safety, mining, and other initiatives to the front-line workers while working alongside support departments (i.e.: CSR, dispatch, engineering, geology, survey, and maintenance).
Essential Duties
- Zero Harm focus for all employees, contractors, and visitors to the site.
- Prepare the Surface Safety Card daily and utilize Fatality Risk Management.
- Use of Fatality Risk Management daily.
- Conduct daily Pre-Starts and monthly safety meetings reviewing incidents, procedures, monthly topics, and address concerns.
- Promote and follow IRS and Safety programs.
- High visibility in the workplace with face-to-face interactions with employees reviewing risk assessments as well as any employee concerns.
- Address and follow up on issues arising from inspections, audits, and employee concerns.
- Daily toolbox meetings that may include review of new procedures, recent incidents, or hazard alerts.
- Review log sheets and Safety Cards for safety issues and address concerns.
- Conduct audits to ensure safe pit conditions, practices, and equipment pre inspections.
- Ensure pre inspections are completed and proper communication and visibility is maintained in pit areas
- Enter incidents into Enablon promptly as well as complete and close out assigned action items.
- Assign and communicate job tasks to employees and ensure they have proper knowledge, tools, and skills to do the job safely.
- Support mill to ensure maximized production.
- Follow general foreman log instructions to meet or exceed plan and complete required projects.
- Use and assist support staff where needed. (i.e. survey, geology, maintenance.)
- Attend daily planning and Operating Condition meetings when on shift.
- Achieve production targets, maximize efficiency and utilization of pit equipment and personnel, and maintain constant feed to Primary crusher.
- Complete projects as assigned for 5S.
- Work with dispatcher to maximize production efficiencies and best use of Minestar dispatch system.
- Work with surface trainers to ensure employees are trained and coached in accordance with operational requirements and to the CBA, to be as effective as possible in their jobs.
- Attend meetings for maintenance and short-term planning.
- Ensure employees concerns are addressed in a prompt, respectful and constructive manner.
- Manage personnel according PGM policies and the CBA, providing them with regular feedback on expectations, achievements, and areas for improvement.
- Working with dispatcher to monitor/address noise, dust and vibration concerns using BMP protocol adjusting work efforts as required.
- Complete worker and student evaluations as well as reviewing it with those reporting to this position.
Training & Experience
- Grade 12 diploma or sufficient equivalent.
- 1 year in spare supervisors’ role.
- Ability to read engineering plans.
- Good working knowledge of blasting pattern design, equipment, and procedures.
- Strong communication skills.
Working Conditions
- In this role, you will work a 5x5x4 schedule. As such, if you do not live near the site, we will require you to relocate.
- This position is located at our Porcupine Mine located near Timmins, ON.
