Location: Southampton General Hospital
Working Hours: 20 Hours per week (Tuesday – Friday)
Job Purpose:
- To oversee Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) delivery in health and social care research applications which are being supported by RDS South Central
- To support delivery of RDS Public Involvement strategic aims across RDS SC alongside wider PPI team. This includes supporting the Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) agenda within PPI.
- To support national and regional projects aimed at improving and promoting PPI in health research.
Key accountabilities/primary responsibilities:
- To be responsible for ensuring specialist professional advice and support for Public Involvement is available to all research applicants supported by RDS SC. This will include attending and ensuring Public Involvement is represented at various events run by the RDS, including delivering talks at training events, providing review, and providing feedback at review panels.
- To Provide specialist advice and support regarding Patient and Public Involvement to support and aid management decisions regarding PI strategy, both regionally and nationally.
- To contribute to the RDS SC’s role in delivering the Wessex Public Involvement Network’s (PIN) strategic aims through membership of the operations group and supporting PIN activities.
- To support strategic national RDS work via the Public Involvement Community, including being an active member of Task & Finish groups
- To draft reports and updates on Public Involvement. This will include collating information for inclusion in the annual report and drafting the report alongside senior staff.
- To deliver presentations and workshops at events to support the learning and development of the research community’s understanding and capacity for Public Involvement.
- Any other duties as allocated by the line manager following consultation with the post holder.

- Effective time management to handle varied work schedule, and ability to deliver to short deadlines.
- Ability to organise participatory events, interactive workshops and clear engaging presentations
- Excellent time management and capacity to respond to needs of various organisations promptly.
- Able to develop understanding of long-standing and complex problems and to apply professional knowledge and experience to solve them.
- Able to contribute to development of long-term strategic developments for PPI within RDS SC.
- Able to use initiative to respond to problems and develop initiatives to improve Patient and Public Involvement in the design of research.
- Able to proactively work with colleagues in other work areas to achieve outcomes.
- Able to support senior staff, using expert knowledge to provide guidance and advice in a timely and constructive manner.
Desirable Skills:
- Experience in public speaking
- Experience of successfully managing others
