Service Aims:

The Starting Well Partnership has delivered services for children, young people, and families across Worcestershire since April 2020.

The Partnership, which is led by Hereford and Worcestershire Health and Care NHS Trust and includes Barnardo's, Action for Children and Bromsgrove and Redditch Borough Council, brings together a range of teams from health visitors, specialist nursery nurses, breastfeeding support, school health nurses, early help services and support for children who require more specialist care.

They support ‘parents to be' and their children during the early years and will ensure young people's health needs are met as they move through school towards adulthood. Starting Well Family Hubs in each of the county's six districts offer a range of support including parenting groups.

The Partnership works alongside schools to identify and address health and wellbeing needs empowering local families and young people to access networks and groups across the community to get the help and support they need.

Job Purpose:

To provide advice, support and services to children, young people and their families in accordance with the aims and objectives of the service. (Specifics of Service attached as applicable).

Key Responsibilities:

  • To work with children, young people and their families, on a one to one or group basis, using a variety of interventions, to identify needs and to achieve positive outcomes.
  • To work in partnership with parents/carers to empower them and to enable them to achieve better outcomes for their children.
  • To work co-operatively with children's services, health agencies and other community based services, to provide the most effective service for children young people and families.
  • To apply safeguarding and child protection procedures.
  • To be responsible for case note recording, contributing to case reports.
  • To identify, recruit and retain families with a focus on engaging vulnerable families e.g. known to social care, resident in most deprived areas, care leaver or teenage parents.
  • Deliver a comprehensive range of positive parenting support services and evidence-based groups to parents and carers ensuring access to services is available when needed.
  • To provide information, advice and guidance and education to support the confidence and resilience of parents ‘to-be' and vulnerable parents and carers in their parenting.
  • In relation to the provision of positive parenting support services and groups, work with partners from other agencies or services to co-ordinate and deliver bespoke support packages which meet each family's needs; being responsive to their changing needs.
  • To work in alignment with Health Visitors to provide ‘sessions for expectant and new parents with a focus on vulnerable families e.g. known to social care, resident in most deprived areas, care leaver or teenage parents.
  • Use the identified Assessment processes to work together with families and other agencies to identify the causes of concern affecting the whole family, to build on the strengths within the family and be part of a plan within the parenting remit.
  • Lead an assertive but supportive approach with families to engage families in identifying and implementing solutions, whilst building on the positive views of children, young people, parents, and carers.
  • To develop and maintain relationships and environments to provide the best possible service to improve the health, social and emotional well-being of children and expectant parents and families.
  • Through use of evidence-based monitoring tools demonstrate progress of parents with improved parenting capacity following support.
  • To ensure a happy, safe, stimulating, and nurturing environment is provided for all children and parents/carers accessing the Family Hubs.
  • To provide a high-quality service to service users by maintaining confidentiality.

Person Specification (E = Essential, D = Desirable)

Candidates will need to demonstrate and evidence the following:

  • Knowledge and experience of safeguarding children and young people (E).
  • Level 3 Qualification (E).
  • Experience working with families including children and young people (E).
  • Understanding of child development, family functioning and parent styles (E).
  • Ability to work effectively in partnership and collaboration with families and local agencies (E).
  • Demonstrable experience of good written and electronic case recording (E).
  • Ability to communicate effectively and with a nurturing nature with children, young people and families, especially those for a hard to engage (E).
  • Knowledge of Trauma Informed Practice (D).
