
Paralegal: Rights Protection Unit (12 Month Fixed Term Contract) London, England
Job description
Responsibilities:
- Carry out investigations of online services (such as stream-ripping services), including website infrastructures; server location; domain hosting arrangements; and tracing advertisers; payment services; and sources of content files.
- Research, analyse and investigate issues and trends relating to online piracy from a technical perspective, both on request and at own initiative, and prepare reports for the RPU and for other PRS for Music
- Presenting on issues around online piracy and related technology, investigations and the work of the RPU to both internal and external stakeholders.
- Conduct investigations and prepare evidence packs for referrals to the City of London Police, Police IP Crime Unit (PIPCU).
- Support the development and further uptake of MAPS (the Member Anti-Piracy System), for the provision of an effective, efficient and economical anti-piracy solution for members for (i) the removal of unauthorised copies of repertoire made available online, and (ii) the reporting back to members of takedown results.
- Maintaining accurate and up to date written records of all referrals and enforcement activities.
- Assisting with data subject access requests and related GDPR processes.
- Assisting in the implementation and tracking of specific compliance initiatives, including the roll out of compliance materials and training.
- Assisting the lawyers in the preparation of advice for internal clients. This includes drafting, preparation of client materials and legal research where required.
- Assisting with legal escalations including drafting correspondence, input on witness statements, and other litigation processes including disclosure.
- Assisting in the implementation of a “know-how” culture, including delivery of the knowledge management processes to capture and share know-how produced by the legal team.
- Assisting with negotiating and drafting licence agreements.
- Completion of or enrolment on the Legal Practice Course and/or equivalent post graduate legal research qualification.
- Degree level qualification (LLB in Law or equivalent).
- Strong Microsoft Office and other IT skills relevant to legal research.
- Good communication skills (oral and written) and attention to detail.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills to liaise with staff at all levels, external professionals, members and the public.
- Strong organisational and time management skills including the ability to work well under pressure and working effectively to meet deadlines.
- Ability to methodically analyse and summarise complex issues
- Interested in developing a legal career in the creative industries.
- Familiarity with the online piracy landscape for music and/or other similar content, including BitTorrent networks, clients and stream-ripping services.
- Knowledge of the distribution network for mobile apps, including Apple’s App Store, Google Play and third-party stores.
- Knowledge and expertise in (i) computer science, (ii) internet technologies, networks and computer hardware, and/or (iii) computer coding standards.
- Ability to write scripts in support of the tasks required, using Python.
- Familiarity with the use of VPNs, proxies and other “cloaking” techniques to circumvent local ISP detection/intervention.
