Qualified applicants will be considered for vacancies in both the Department of Public Works (DPW)- Infrastructure Division (Electrical Services) and the Milwaukee Police Department- Facilities Maintenance Section.
PURPOSE
Working within the DPW Infrastructure (Electrical Services), the incumbent will perform painting functions related to pavement markings, field hardware, screen preparation, and signs and printing.
Working within the Milwaukee Police Department (MPD), the incumbent will paint and stain various types of interior and exterior surfaces.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Electrical Services Only
- Paint lane lines, center lines, bike lanes, and special purpose marking and or lines.
- Maintain all equipment used for pavement markings and sign making.
- Screen print various signs and decals; stencil screens.
- Use the computer and plotter to produce signs.
General Painting (Both DPW and MPD vacancies):
- Apply primary or seal coat with spray gun, roller or brush.
- Produce special finishes by stripping, glazing, matching the color and type of existing paints and stains, mixing and applying special epoxy paints and mixing and thinning paints and varnishes.
- Prepare surfaces for painting including patching holes or cracks, cleaning surfaces, removing old paint, applying putty and caulking.
- Protect furniture, floors and surfaces using drop cloths, masking and tape.
- Erect and work from scaffolding, extension and step ladders and needle beam scaffolding.
- Clean and properly maintain all equipment including: brushes, rollers, roller skins, paint pots, spray guns, air hoses, compressor filters on spray painting.
- Properly store and maintain all painting equipment.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
- Ability to perform physically demanding work, including lifting and carrying 50 lbs. or more of equipment or material on a daily basis.
- Ability to wear a respirator and other personal protective equipment (PPE) while completing regular duties, including operating spray equipment.
- Ability to work at heights of up to 50 feet, in confined spaces, and in variable temperature conditions.
- Ability to bend and stoop to conduct work.
- Ability to erect and work from ladders, scaffolding and swing stages.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
- Two years of professional painting experience related to the essential functions outlined above.
- Valid driver's license at time of appointment and throughout employment.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience in operation of road marking equipment.
- Experience in screen printing.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES & OTHER CHARACTERISTICS
Technical
- Knowledge of procedures, methods and practices of the painting trade.
- Knowledge of different paints and solvents and their practical uses.
- Knowledge of and skill in using the hand tools and equipment used in painting.
- Knowledge of mathematics to calculate time and material estimates.
- Skill in the use, care, and operation of painting equipment.
- Ability to mix and match paints.
Safety and Judgment
- Knowledge of and ability to follow safety precautions relative to paint and other chemicals used on the job.
- Ability to problem-solve by taking projects and breaking them down into manageable steps.
- Ability to prioritize, organize, and accomplish work assignments by required deadlines.
- Ability to erect and work from ladders, scaffolding and swing stage.
Interpersonal
- Ability to follow directions presented in both verbal and written forms.
- Ability to represent the City positively and to interact with customers in a tactful and professional matter.
- Oral communication skills to interact with managers, contractors, customers, and other staff.
- Ability to lead the work activities of other employees in painting assignments.
- Ability to work cooperatively and fairly with people whose backgrounds may differ from one's own.
CURRENT SALARY
The current salary (pay range 7IN) is $58,641 annually and the resident incentive salary range for City of Milwaukee residents is $60,401 annually.

SELECTION PROCESS
THE SELECTION PROCESS will be job related and will consist of one or more of the following: an evaluation of education, experience and/or responses to supplemental questions; a written or performance test; a structured interview; or other assessment methods. The Department of Employee Relations reserves the right to call only the most qualified candidates to structured interviews and performance examinations. Structured interviews may include written exercises. Selection process component weights will be determined by further analysis of the job.
