About the role
We have an exciting opportunity for a Lead Biomedical Research Scientist to join Oxford Cancer, a city-wide research initiative and partnership between Oxford University, Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust, Thames Valley Cancer Alliance and the Oxfordshire Clinical Commissioning Group. We seek to harness Oxford’s world-leading cancer research from our growing network of 1,000+ members who are working in cancer-related fields. This network covers a range of disciplines, all with the core aim of facilitating collaboration to ensure rapid translation of scientific discovery to treatments for patients.
An important part of Oxford Cancer’s activity is the establishment and management of laboratories, services and facilities used by a variety of cancer researchers working on cutting edge, innovative and high impact projects. Collaborators include academics at Oxford and across the UK, as well as commercial and industry partners.
This position will require you to develop, oversee and conduct a range of techniques and methods pertaining to clinical sample collection, storage and processing. One of the main objectives will be to deliver all activity according to local and University rules and codes of practice with regard to Health and Safety.
As the Lead Biomedical Research Scientist, you will provide quality and laboratory management for our laboratories, specifically write, maintain, and work to SOPs. Working closely with clinical trials and research teams to ensure seamless interface with a priority placed on sample quality. You will line manage junior team members and sample handling facility.
Your role will also encompass general responsibilities such as overseeing purchasing and financial procedures for the laboratory team, handling personal data with discretion and confidentiality, and reporting on team activities to senior leadership and oversight committees.
This is a full-time post based at Oxford Cancer, New Richards Building, Headington, Oxford, OX3 7LA, and is available on a three-year fixed term contract.
About you
You must hold a BSc or equivalent, in a biological/life science. You will have experience of the techniques and methods listed in the responsibilities section of the job description. You will be well-versed with GCP standards and demonstrate proven experience in working in a molecular/biochemistry laboratory. You will have proven ability to prioritise, plan and manage a high volume of work to meet deadlines, both prescribed and self-imposed, and ensure that the laboratory runs in an efficient and timely manner. You will have experience of line management of technical staff and taking consenting from patients for their participation in research. Knowledge in biochemical/molecular biological technical expertise like assay development and validation, as well as
experience of setting up and using digital Quality Management and Laboratory Management systems would be advantageous.
