Your role and responsibilities
We are looking for a passionate and dedicated Registered Veterinary Nurse (RVN) to join our dedicated out-of-hours (OOHs) night team.
Our OOHs department includes a team of 12 experienced RVNs, 2 Student Veterinary Nurses (SVN) and 2 Patient Care Assistants (PCAs) with extended support from the wider nursing team. There is also a dedicated OOH veterinary surgeon working each night with support from interns.
The daily running of the OOH department includes:
- Inpatient care and support of the hospitalised referral patients requiring overnight care, including patients from our orthopaedic, neurology, soft tissue, cardio and internal medicine services.
- Specific ICU care of critical patients
- Supporting local primary care practices with their OOH emergency service, cases range for advice calls, first aid, triage of emergencies and anaesthesia support for surgical procedures.
Excellent social and clinical skills are a must, as well as the ability to commit to a rolling rota, including weekend and bank holiday shifts.
Previous referral nursing not essential, as we offer training and support to fully qualified RVNs joining the practice from primary care. We provide full anaesthesia training and training and development support with CPD encouraged and funded.
We have a fully staffed client care team working 7am -10pm supporting out-of-hours calls and full cleaning support of non-clinical areas so our nursing team can concentrate on nursing.

Hours: This is a full-time position working 12 night shifts a month (average of 39 hrs/week).

Working as a nurse for Wear Referrals entails real nursing to a very high standard in our state-of-the-art, award-winning Veterinary Hospital just off junction 60 of the A1.
We are a multidisciplinary practice with Neurology, Orthopaedic, Soft Tissue, Internal Medicine, Oncology, Cardiology, Out of Hours and Rehabilitation teams. Practice facilities include a dedicated ICU ward for critical patients staffed 24 hours a day, in-house MRI and CT, 4 operating theatres, endoscopy and ultra-sound facilities and dedicated patient wards. Successful candidates will have the opportunity to develop their own expertise, working with leading OOH clinicians.
