As Head of Base Maintenance, you will play a key role in driving this agenda by further developing, improving and implementing the E&M Base Maintenance organisation in TUI Aviation. You will also drive the further digitalisation, process standardisation and pan-European optimisation of the E&M Base Maintenance organisation.


The role of the Head of Base Maintenance is to manage all internal base maintenance requirements ensuring the maintenance programme is delivered as efficiently as possible across two heavy maintenance facilities. This includes maximising the operational capability and flexibility of our internal Base Maintenance capacities, ensuring full capacity usage where it makes financial and/or operational sense, in coordination with outsourced heavy maintenance activities for all fleet types, to maximise operational flexibility and delivery. Leading a global team of c. 200 colleagues with a seasonal contract labour complement, and managing a budget of c. 100m EUR excluding overheads, you will design and deliver a dual location base maintenance operation, coordinated via a centralised production planning and support team.

The Head of Base Maintenance leads multiple unionised workforces to deliver a punctual, efficient and cost competitive operation in line with the maintenance strategy to the highest quality and safety standards, whilst consistently seeking opportunities for further improvement.


You will split your time between our heavy maintenance facilities in Luton and Brussels, so flexibility to travel regularly between these 2 locations is required. There may be additional occasion travel to other European locations.

ABOUT THE JOB


As Head of Base Maintenance you will bring a clear strategic vision, direction and guidance to the entire E&M Base Maintenance function driving significant change and modernisation of working practices in legacy workforces in multiple countries.


  • Lead the strategy and delivery of world class base maintenance function within TUI E&M at optimum cost and highest quality, reliability and efficiency for the fleet
  • Specify, implement and manage the entirety of the Base Maintenance facilities across locations in Brussels and Luton, including the provision of professional equipment
  • Establish and maintain appropriate and efficient maintenance departmental policies and procedures to ensure adherence to regulatory requirements
  • Continually push boundaries to drive continuous improvement and an ever more competitive base maintenance strategy, based on performance measures and benchmarking, learning and innovation and external best practice
  • Ensure consistent on time delivery of all base maintenance activities maintaining production targets with a focus on quality, cost and delivery
  • Manage and further develop outstanding relationships and interfaces with relevant internal stakeholders across E&M, Finance and Supplier Management & Procurement
  • Work closely with planning department and Aircraft Asset and Business Management (AABM) department to achieve optimal unit cost
  • Lead an accurate production planning function to underpin efficient and reliable delivery, whilst seeking innovative ways to reduce downtime and cost
  • Further optimise the TUI E&M workshops to ensure cost efficient delivery at highest quality
  • Identify and develop opportunities for third party revenue, exploiting financial opportunities without compromising delivery
  • Establish and maintain business risk and safety management systems within base maintenance to ensure the safe delivery of operational requirements through effective control of risks
  • As member of the E&M Board, you will also deliver strategic projects and initiatives as required by the Director of E&M


ABOUT YOU

  • Aviation background with significant senior management experience within a technical or operational arena
  • A self-motivated leader who takes the initiative and works collaboratively with a track record of motivating and developing a diverse team
  • Satisfactory to the relevant Aviation Regulator(s) as a Nominated Person
  • Understanding of Human Factors within the E&M environment
  • Ability to operate within a virtual airline in a pan-European arena, with multiple customers and stakeholders across a range of source markets
  • Able to combine technical, contractual and commercial aspects in an aviation environment
  • Detailed contractual knowledge of maintenance agreements
  • Proven financial acumen to prepare and control budgets
  • A skilled communicator with the proven ability to influence, partner with senior leaders, develop a strong network of contacts throughout the industry and gain support and commitment from line managers and employees across the business
  • Proven ability to employ analytical tools to improve performance
  • Ability to think commercially and strategically whilst ensuring full regulatory compliance is achieved and maintained
  • A logical thinker with the ability to generate ideas and alternatives
  • Demonstrable ability to clearly articulate concepts and arguments verbally and in written documentation
  • Preferable holding a B.Sc. or M.Sc. degree in (Aeronautical) Engineering
