Role Available in Location: Montrose

Education required: To apply for this placement, you must be:

Currently studying a degree in Chemistry, with a high content in organic chemistry or closely related degree such as medicinal chemistry which has a significant component of organic chemistry there-in. A passion for synthetic organic chemistry is a must.

Other requirements: You will have completed a minimum of 2 years of your undergraduate degree but will not have graduated at the start of your placement. You must be enrolled at a UK (United Kingdom) or ROI (Republic of Ireland) university for the duration of your placement.


If you have already graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree and are currently studying a postgraduate Masters, you are not eligible for this programme.


Language requirement:
Written and spoken fluency in English

A salary of £21,400 plus a bonus

Global Supply Chain (GSC) is the group within GSK that is responsible for making and supplying medicines and vaccines across the globe. At our manufacturing sites we produce over 2.3 billion medication packs and vaccines doses to 90% of the world's countries.

Your role as an organic chemist will give you valuable hands-on experience for working as part of a multidisciplinary team of synthetic organic chemists, material scientists and analytical scientists. In this role you will be undertaking synthetic organic chemistry experiments to support process improvements, route changes, mimic plant conditions for new chemical entities, impurity synthesis and impurity process mapping, etc. Key roles and responsibilities will include:


  • Developing process improvements to existing manufacturing processes to maximise yields, reduce cycle times, processing costs and to minimise waste.

  • Improving process understanding and robustness

  • Synthesising novel entities

  • Supporting and troubleshooting processing issues encountered during the manufacture of commercial products.


You will be applying the skills you already have and developing new skills such as: team working, problem solving and building relationships. You will work with and learn from an experienced team of organic chemists; they will coach and mentor you during your year to help you achieve your potential.

Role/Location:
Montrose

Our 45-acre primary manufacturing site at Montrose is within easy reach of Dundee and Aberdeen. It is our largest UK chemical manufacturing facility and celebrated its 70th anniversary in 2022. The site has state-of-the-art manufacturing and testing facilities, with a range of operations from reaction, distillation, crystallisation and filtration/drying. The site produces a wide range of active ingredients across more than 30 stages of chemistry for some of our most important medicines including respiratory, HIV and dermatological products. Every day, an estimated 30 million people take medication that includes an ingredient from Montrose.


During your placement you will gain valuable experience as an organic chemist including:

  • The use of laboratory equipment including automated lab equipment

  • Learning key laboratory procedures including reaction set up, distillations, crystallisations, drying, and column chromatography purification techniques.

  • The use of search engines including SciFinder to conduct literature searches to aid process development.

  • Analysing test results, data and writing technical reports

  • You will also gain practical experience in spectroscopic characterisation (NMR/ FTIR and MS), reaction monitoring (open access HPLC), Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) and the regulatory aspects inherent in an active pharmaceutical environment.


This role will particularly suit if you want to gain experience working in a manufacturing site laboratory and have a passion for organic chemistry.
