Job description

In Deals we solve the important problems that stand in the way of value being created, sustained, realised or protected for our clients – working together to aid responsible recovery and growth. Working on iconic deals with national and global clients, we put together major mergers and acquisitions and resolve business crises - from international take-over bids to financial crime investigations and cases of insolvency. We draw upon our deals experience across many industries to support and partner with our clients, to positively impact society and the communities in which we operate.

Business and opportunity

The PwC restructuring and insolvency team is one of the UK’s leading restructuring and insolvency practices. We offer a range of services to corporates, lenders, regulators and government bodies helping to support them when facing some form of corporate stress or crisis. Whilst much of the work comes from direct referrals a large percentage is from the development of proactively produced pitches and other materials.

To support our client facing team we have a full-time team, the Opportunities Unit, which has responsibility for coordinating our research and analysis of companies (both in the UK and overseas) which may potentially be facing some form of stress or distress. The team also supports the creation of our wider sector insight reports (which look at trends across sectors and industries).

As part of the development and evolution of the Opportunities Unit we are looking to recruit a senior researcher to work alongside the existing members of the team who are drawn from our client facing teams. The role will be to:

1) oversee all the research activities being undertaken by the team across individual corporate targets and sector opportunities;

2) coordinate the collation of information from the various data sources and market intel captured by our wider team;

3) help produce focused discussion documents and company specific targets.

The discussion documents produced both give insight into a specific sector or company and provide a strategic view on how these challenges can be overcome or the business supported.

The individual might come from a range of backgrounds and we are open to consider candidates who have the relevant capability, irrespective of where they have gained that experience. They may, for example, have worked as a research analyst or manager in the financial services sector or alternatively might have worked in financial news. The individual should have an understanding of corporate debt structures and stakeholders and experience of restructuring, whilst ideal, is not essential.

Role responsibilities

  • Identify and track corporate debt restructuring opportunities using research tools, a variety of triggers, market gossip and a variety of news sources

  • Liaise with partners and directors from across the firm to assess the potential challenges, restructuring solutions and opportunities

  • Convert opportunities into new fee-paying engagements by producing high quality discussion documents/pitches and presenting these to key stakeholders

  • Lead client facing pipeline meetings which involves discussing companies, sectors and the market with funds, banks and lawyers that operate in the restructuring market

  • Produce thought pieces / oversee the production of thought pieces on key sectors and industries

  • Train junior team on credit assessments and distress opportunity identification

Essential Experience

  • Be able to develop relationships quickly with both internal and external stakeholders

  • Be passionate about hunting out opportunities, following the market and developing solutions to complex issues

  • Be able to quickly assess the financial viability of a company and identify opportunities where PwC can add value to a situation from either an operational, financial or pension perspective

  • Understand the current economic environment and have a good understanding of current issues across all sectors

  • Display strong financial modeling skills and excellent use of powerpoint and google slides
