Job description
QinetiQ is growing – and it is a great time to be part of the community. As we enter new markets around the world, we need talented Engineers, Technicians, Scientists and Mathematicians to join our Synthetic Environments and Simulation teams.
You will be part of a business that was named the Most Admired Aerospace & Defence Company in the Britain’s Most Admired Companies 2021 study. You will also be joining a diverse, inclusive employer that’s proud to provide a collaborative, open working environment. With our Adaptive approach, you will enjoy the work-life balance that suits you best, thanks to remote, hybrid and flexible working practices.
We currently have opportunities in Synthetic Environments and Simulation across our sites in Farnborough, Malvern and Lincoln, but location should not be an issue if you have the skills and enthusiasm that we seek. If you are interested in joining us – now or in the future – we would love to hear from you.
If your skills fit one of our opportunities, we shall be in contact. If we don’t have a role that’s right for you at the moment, we’ll keep your CV on file for possible opportunities in the future.
What do our Synthetic Environment and Simulation Engineers, Technicians and Scientists do?
In general, our Synthetic Environment and Simulation people have a broad understanding of modelling and simulation concepts and technologies that may include knowledge and skills in some of the following areas:
Distributed and federated simulation.
Simulation with a Human or Machine in the loop. Including knowledge and understanding of digital representation or environment modelling and associated tools/technologies such as Image Generation and visualisation of tactical or geospatial information. Experience with games engines such as VBS or Unity may be beneficial. As an example of our work, we have recently delivered an experiment using simulation to the Army to help them understand the detailed impact of electric vehicles on mission success.
Live, Virtual and Constructive (LVC) blends. Concepts and principles underpinning LVC systems for Operational Training or Test & Evaluation, including awareness of how simulations can safely and effectively interact with operational communications, command and control systems. In this area, we are currently helping the Royal Navy train for large-scale missions by supplementing their live training with simulated threats.
Specification and development of simulation-based systems comprising a blend of off-the-shelf capabilities, including ‘serious games’, and bespoke software.
Integration of systems comprising a range of technologies and concepts, such as Virtual and Augmented Reality and Live, Virtual & Constructive (LVC) blends. We are helping Army medics train for combat situations through an Augmented Reality simulation of an ambulance.
Modelling and configuring simulation components using a variety of tools e.g. 3D models, terrains, Computer Generated Forces scenarios/vignettes.
Practical and theoretical research, considering the use of emerging technologies and training theories to provide evidence and ideas for training systems.
New to Synthetic Environments and Simulation?
In your first role or have some experience in Synthetic Environments and Simulation? Your talents may be a good match for our team. We recruit from a range of academic and professional backgrounds and if you have qualifications or experience in Science, Mathematics, Computer Simulation, Modelling, Virtual Reality, Simulation Engineering, or Systems Engineering in Simulation, we would love to speak with you. You will be offered the opportunities to develop your depth and breadth of expertise and experience and set you on the path for advancement.
Opportunities for mid-career Synthetic Environment and Simulation Engineers, Technicians and Scientists
If you are a mid-career professional working in an associated industry, you will be applying your expertise right from day one. Whatever your specialism or background, you can expect ongoing development to help you excel and advance. This includes expert training and mentoring, with increased emphasis on self-development and on-the-job training.
Opportunities for highly experienced Synthetic Environment and Simulation Engineers, Technicians and Scientists
As a senior Synthetic Environment and Simulation Engineer, Technician or Scientist, you will already be a respected member of the community and can expect further specialist development (which may include conference attendance and paper presentation, for example), and targeted mentoring to develop specific technical skills. If you have senior management potential, we’ll spot and nurture it. However, to progress to more senior roles, you’ll need to be an active member of an appropriate professional body.
Our Fellowship scheme recognises and develops professionals with high-level, specialist technical expertise.
