Ophthalmic Technician – Band 3
Department: Out-patient Department Moorfields South at St George’s and satellites (Nelson Community Centre, Queen Mary Roehampton and other Future Satellites under St Georges)
Grade: Band 3
Hours: 37.5 hours per week (Include weekends)
To provide a technical and clinical service for the Out-patient service in Moorfield’s South at St Georges and Satellites.
Following training, the post holder will be working alongside nurses and clinicians to assist with delivery of care to patients when attending clinics.
The post holder will be expected to undertake in-house training regarding the different equipment.
Assist in the education and training of new staff when needed.
PROBATIONARY PERIOD
This post will be subject to a probationary period of 6 months
During the probationary period, your suitability for continued employment will be assessed and provided a satisfactory standard is achieved and maintained, your employment will be confirmed. The probationary period may be extended or your employment terminated either during or at the end of probation, in line with the trust Probationary Policy. For the duration of the probation period, the notice period will be in line with contractual obligations on either side.

THE POST
Job Summary
To provide a technical and clinical service for the Out-patient service in Moorfield’s South at St Georges and Satellites.
Following training, the post holder will be working alongside nurses and clinicians to assist with delivery of care to patients when attending clinics.
The post holder will be expected to undertake in-house training regarding the different equipment.
Assist in the education and training of new staff when needed.
Work with all members of the multi-professional team (nursing, medical staff, allied health professionals, support workers and all members of the management team).
To support qualified nursing staff in providing high quality individualised care to a define group of service users. Working in a manner that promotes dignity and human rights through the adoption of person centered care principles.
You will be allocated to different sites (St Georges, Nelson Community Centre and Queen Mary’s Hospital and Future Satellites under St Georges).
MAIN RESPONSIBILTITES
1 Clinical and Patient Care
Responsible for carrying out clinical ophthalmic practice within the clinic, ensuring that high quality care is delivered at all times when patients attending clinics.
- To assist Nurse and Doctors in the treatment room for the delivery of using aseptic techniques. To use certain drops under PGD’s and be aware of limitations of own’s practice.
- To work alongside all staff in all areas of the patient pathway, i.e. outpatient clinic activity, nurse led clinics, surgical day-care and in-patients when needed whilst demonstrating infection control principles.
- To have attained the competencies such as patient observations (Blood Pressure electronic and manual measurement, TPR,RBS,HbA1c, BMI calculation, ECG, intra ocular measurement using contact and non-contact tonometry such as I-care, ORA, vision assessment using LogMar and Snellen test charts in accordance with Trust and National guidelines.
- Will be responsible for the application of knowledge across the range of ophthalmic work procedures and practices, underpinned by theoretical knowledgeand practical experience.
- At all times treat patients with dignity, care and respect, exercising discretion and maintaining their confidentiality.
- Responsible for maintaining the equipment, ensuring it is safe to use and assist with data archiving. The successful candidate will be expected to develop clinical skills appropriate to their role and responsibilities within the injection service.
- To ensure that patients’ receive high quality clinical care and a good patient experience, having regard for their customs, religious beliefs and doctrines.
- To support qualified nurses in the assessment of health needs, planning, delivery and evaluation of care for a number of individuals or groups of patients when attending the injection clinic.
- To undertake medicine assessment and to follow the Trust’s Patient Group Directive for the administration of eye drops for patients undergoing intravitreal injections.
- Competent in the use of MEH PAS, Open Eyes, EProcurement, and to be able to contact the relevant department whenever any IT issues arises.
- To provide reassurance, advice and comfort to all patients, many who might have complex emotional, psychological problems and understand how to escalate if necessary.
- Maintain departmental stock levels by overseeing the ordering of stores.
- To maintain and update relevant knowledge and skills, maintain a professional portfolio and participate in further training as appropriate, in order to enhance quality of care for patients and carers.
- Will act in accordance with local, hospital and statutory guidelines and policies including health and safety initiatives.
- Will compile a personal & professional portfolio (in conjunction with the performance management process and the compilation of a Personal Development Plan.
- Will practice in a cost effective and cost aware manner in the allocation of resources and management of hospital stock.
- Take all possible precautions to safeguard the welfare and safety of staff, service users, visitors and the public, by implementing all policies related to health, safely, security and risk.
- Will establish a relationship with a clinical supervisor/ mentor/ preceptor.
- Provide specialised advice concerning the care and treatment of identified groups or categories of ophthalmic patients/clients.
- Communicate effectively and efficiently with all members of the multi-disciplinary team regarding patient care.
- Will communicate with patients and relatives, and liaising as appropriate with medical staff other member of the care team and management.
- Report to the Doctor/Sister/Charge Nurse and members of the multidisciplinary team on patient’s conditions, both verbally and in writing as required.
- Liaise with inter-hospital departments/personnel and also District Nurses/Social Services if and when needed.
- Attend and participate in ward meetings and help promote new ideas and methods and assist in their implementation.
- Act as a role model, giving guidance, counselling and support to unqualified staff and students.
- Actively contribute to the teaching programme within the ward.
- Act as a mentor and introduce new staff members to their role within the team.
- Act as a preceptor for newly qualified members of staff.
- Take every opportunity to maintain and improve knowledge and competence, andtakesteps to keep up to date with clinical and Technical developments.
- Maintain clear and legible patient records in accordance with both Trust and professional standards for record keeping.
- In conjunction with the Theatre Department Manager and other senior members of the multi-disciplinary team develop a positive culture and environment for both staff and patients.
- In conjunction with other senior members of the multi-disciplinary team be responsible for and maintain a high standard of care within the service which is evidence based, consistent with legislation and embodies a recovery focus of care.
- Encourage service users in providing feedback on the quality of service provided on the ward both on a local and Trust level and provide leadership in implementing user focused quality improvement initiatives.
