Job description
Our client is setting up a new warehouse facility. They are keen to appoint the Operations Manager as soon as possible, so that he or she may then recruit the rest of the management team. The team will eventually grow to around 150 people on site.
The facility will process a range of items, some of which high value and specialised, and will lend itself to becoming automated over time.
The Operations Manager will take accountability for the day-to-day running of the ‘bonded’ central processing unit (CPU). Reporting to the Head of Logistics, the successful candidate will lead their team ensuring that operational, service and regulatory standards and KPI’s are delivered on a 16/7 basis. They will have start up, migration and automation experience with the ability to recruit and embed a new team to deliver the brand new operation.

Principal Accountabilities
Finance and KPI
- Lead the operational team to control and positively impact agreed financial and operational KPI targets such as cost, productivity, SLA’s, stock integrity, absence, and Health & Safety
- Create performance improvement plans from data analysis
Regulation
- Ensure a robust security plan continually meets regulatory standards
- Working with the Inventory and Bond manager, ensure robust control and accounting processes are in place to meet HMRC requirements for a bonded facility
- Develop internal audit processes, and develop continuous improvement plans on audit findings
Planning and Processes
- Prepare resource requirement forecasts to support the operational budgeting process
- Analyse performance trends to identify risks and opportunities and deliver process improvements on the findings
- Ensure daily planning meetings are held using accurate, relevant information to enable the CPU to meet its targets
People and Communication
- Act as a leader at all times setting clear direction and high standards for all to achieve
- Motivate a team of operational managers to achieve business goals, focussing on operational performance and continuous improvement
- Be visible to all and create high levels of employee engagement by managing day-to-day communications and promoting ‘performance through engagement’ throughout the CPU

Competencies and Experience
- At least 3 years' experience leading a FMCG operation
- Track record of forming and leading a team, and managing operations through the team
- Approachable and engaging to all colleagues
- Commercially and operationally focused
- Demonstrates high aptitude in: adaptability, resilience and problem-solving
- Places emphasis on regulatory compliance
- Good communicator, capable of delivering messages to a wide range of colleagues from site operatives to Senior PLC management
- Experience of managing complex returns operations
- Start-up experience, including implementation of automated solutions
- Experience of managing change within a large team using project management tools
- Strong IT skills, including extensive WMS experience that includes automation

- £65,000 to £75,000 basic dependent upon experience, with up to 15% bonus
