Shunters is a Removals, Storage and Distribution company based in Berwick. Operating for over 30 years the company is well established in the local area providing services to residential and commercial customers.
The business is under new ownership and is embarking on a period of ambitious growth having recently secured a lease on a new 20k sq. ft warehouse alongside other existing storage facilities. The fleet is also undergoing a period of renewal and growth. In this exciting period of growth the role of Operations Manager has been created to manage the daily operation of the business.
Role Overview:
The Operations Manager will manage the daily operation of Shunters, liaising with customers and team members to plan and execute the planned job list. You will need to be self-motivated and a strong, hands on, leader of teams.
As the Operations Manager, you will play a crucial role in ensuring the efficient and smooth execution of removals and storage services while maintaining a high level of customer satisfaction.
Reporting to the company directors the Operations Manager will manage a team of 6 Full Time Drivers/Porters and 1 Office Supervisor. The team is regularly supplemented with ad hoc labour, and it is not uncommon to have 10+ workers each day.
The Operations Manager must be self-motivated and comfortable working autonomously. No two days will be the same and the individual must have strong problem-solving abilities. The job will predominantly be office based however hands on management on jobs will be required. Shunters regularly conducts long distance removals therefore nights away from home may be required.
Experience in the removals and storage industry is not required and full training will be provided.
Key Responsibilities:
Logistics Management
- Plan, coordinate, and execute all aspects of domestic house removals and storage operations, including scheduling, routing, and allocation of resources.
- Monitor and optimise transportation routes and vehicle maintenance to enhance operational efficiency.
- Ensure compliance with safety regulations and company policies during transportation and handling of goods.
Team Leadership
- Recruit, train, and supervise a team of removalists, drivers, and support staff. Ensure appropriate resource is available to meet demand.
- Foster a positive and collaborative work environment, promoting teamwork and professionalism.
- Set performance expectations and provide constructive feedback to team members.
Resource Management
- Manage inventory and storage facilities, ensuring efficient utilisation of space and organisation of items.
- Monitor and maintain equipment, tools, and supplies necessary for removals and storage.
Customer Service
- Maintain a strong focus on customer satisfaction, responding to inquiries, resolving issues, and addressing customer feedback promptly and effectively.
- Coordinate with sales and customer service teams to ensure accurate service delivery, timely communication, and smooth execution of removals and storage projects.

Quality Control
- Implement quality control processes to ensure the safe handling and transportation of customers' belongings.
- Conduct regular inspections of vehicles, equipment, and storage areas to ensure cleanliness, safety, and compliance.
Operational Efficiency
- Identify opportunities for process improvement and implement streamlined procedures to enhance operational efficiency and reduce costs.
- Analyse performance metrics and operational data to make informed decisions and drive continuous improvement.
Budget Management
- Assist in the development of the operations budget, monitor expenses, and implement cost-saving initiatives while maintaining service quality.
- Track and report on key performance indicators (KPIs) related to operations, including revenue, expenses, and customer satisfaction.
Qualifications & Requirements:
- Proven experience in operations management, logistics, or a related field. Individuals from all backgrounds will be considered.
- Strong leadership skills with the ability to motivate and manage a diverse team.
- Excellent organisational and problem-solving abilities.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
- Proficiency in using computer software and systems related to operations management.
- Ideally hold a Class 2 HGV licence however training can be provided.
- Customer-focused mindset with a commitment to delivering exceptional service.
