Job Introduction

We are looking for a driven and passionate journalist to join the digital team in Wales. You’ll be an experienced digital journalist who knows what online audiences expect and can turn around copy under tight deadlines. This job requires someone who can do more than just look for press releases – we want original journalism that helps reflect the Wales’ diversity with a focus on younger and underserved audiences. The role is based in Wales and involves shift work including late, early and weekend working.

Main Responsibilities

You will cover the full range of news stories from across Wales for online and social platforms. You will be responsible for researching and writing news articles and headlines, sourcing pictures and dealing with breaking news. You will get behind the headlines, explaining issues and producing features to engage and inform our audiences.

Other responsibilities include:

  • Report quickly and accurately the news stories of the day – from breaking news to social issues.
  • Produce original journalism by using a wide range of contacts and sources and identify innovative story ideas and treatments for an online audience.
  • Come up with investigation and feature ideas that help us represent different audiences
  • Report on news stories in the field and from the office, conduct interviews, attend media conferences, live events and report from court.
  • Work as an integral part of the BBC Cymru Wales news team, working alongside producers, correspondents and reporters, as well as the wider BBC.
  • Delivering to tight deadlines while maintaining the highest editorial standards.
Are you the right candidate?

We are looking for people who have;

  • Sound editorial judgement and can make decisions on matters of editorial sensitivity under pressure.
  • Proven ability to deliver original journalism.
  • The ability to work quickly and accurately to a rolling deadline and respond to breaking news, producing high quality copy that demonstrates the BBC’s values of impartiality and fairness.
  • The ability to tell complex stories in an engaging way using a variety of text, video and social media.
  • The ability to build and maintain a range of contacts and sources.
  • A demonstrable understanding of the law in relation to online journalism and the BBC's editorial guidelines.
  • An understanding of the web and social media, ability to identify shareable content, create, package and sell it.
  • A willingness to experiment and try different approaches in digital storytelling to reach new and different audiences.

Package Description

Band: C

Contract: 12 Months FTC - Part Time

Location: Cardiff

You are eligible to apply for an internal role if you are either on a BBC Continuing (Permanent) contract, a BBC Fixed Term contract, a casual contract or freelance contract and you have worked continuously for 6 months.

Only internal staff are eligible to apply for the role on an attachment basis. You need to be on a continuing (permanent) or fixed-term contract.
