Job description

operations

At British Gas, we have a huge opportunity to help customers, and the nation, prepare for a net zero future and support them through a once in a generation cost-of-living crisis.

We’re one of the best-known services companies in the country. We have a compelling set of low carbon solutions for customers, a family of door-opening brands and we’re really excited about the future

British Gas Zero exists to increase and accelerate the impact of British Gas in the energy transition in UK homes. Centrica is uniquely placed to be the leading business driving the energy transition across the UK housing stock. By creating a more autonomous group focused on Net Zero, we intend to quickly establish:

  • Unrivalled economies of scale and efficiency in the installation, integration and management of electrification assets in the home

  • A unique consumer home energy management value proposition that significantly increases stickiness with British Gas as well as offering a compelling value exchange between consumer and business

  • The strongest network of partners that will allow us to unlock growth (from Metro Mayors; to OEMs; to LAHAs; to retailers; to new build developers; to banks and beyond)

British Gas Zero operates with the characteristics of a private-equity backed business, with a clear mid-term investment thesis, a highly motivated leadership team, relentless pursuit of a small number of near-term KPIs, unwilling to accept barriers to our success.

We're now in search of a Head of Operations who will report to the British Gas Zero Fulfilment Director and will be responsible for setting up and running a best-in-class Net Zero operation. This critical role will be responsible for leading all of our customer facing and fulfilment teams, including our engineers in customers’ homes and service delivery partners.

The Head of Operations will ensure we deliver a brilliant customer experience every time, reflecting local market dynamics and putting safety first.

  • Lead an effective, localised fulfilment operating model with trusted, highly skilled people. Delivering a frictionless, effortless experience for customers

  • Implement process and operating rhythm that results in operational rigour and a continuous improvement culture

  • Using our Purpose, inspire Field, Planning and Customer Contact teams working across the full Net Zero product range

  • Remove barriers and create the path to enable the delivery of our OKRs not compromising operational excellence

  • Apply external best practice to the day-to-day operation, including learning from outside the traditional energy sector

Previous experience

  • Demonstrable experience of applying a growth mindset to deliver significant and sustainable improvements in business performance

  • Preferred knowledge and understanding of Net Zero products & services

  • Experience of building, inspiring and motivating teams

  • Proven experience of running a successful operation, driving for commercial OKRs

  • Proven capability in leading & supporting virtual, diverse teams being able to influence at pace and remotely

  • Highly effective communicator, excellent at building internal and external relationships and managing relationships to optimise value

  • Excellent analytical skills

Competencies

  • Credible and trusted communicator, easily able to build strong relationships at a senior level

  • Decisive, able to take ownership and deliver in a fast-paced entrepreneurial environment

  • Possesses the entrepreneurial nous and vision to develop and deliver the regional strategy and plan

  • Naturally driven, enthusiastic with a strong personal commitment to success

  • Motivating and inspiring leader with the ability to galvanise support and influence across the organisation

  • Persistent, “can do” mentality – willing to “roll your sleeves up” and get involved

  • Natural passion to join the NZV business and contribute to our success

  • Intellectual horsepower to understand the detail, alongside the complexity, and still drive the strategic aims of the business plan

  • Experience working within a commercially focused team, with demonstrable experience of managing key deliverables to time, including multiple targets and balancing priorities

  • Previous experience working in an agile, matrixed organisation advantageous

  • Not afraid to challenge the status quo

  • Embraces change and always looking for opportunities to improve performance
