As our next Operations Manager (Bulk Cement), you'll be key in steering and guiding the development and implementation of the Logistics strategy for the GB Cement business. You'll have the opportunity to play a vital role in assisting the Logistics Manager in ensuring the import, storage, and transportation of cement via road, rail and shipping in our north region, delivering a safe and efficient operation.
To truly excel in this role, you'll need to possess a proactive and visible leadership style, be energized and empathetic, and have a talent for working with and leading a team. Your responsibilities will include spearheading Health, Safety, and Wellbeing initiatives for your team at Breedon Cement Depots and Terminals in your region, as well as overseeing Capex and Opex budgets and implementing various projects. Additionally, you'll be accountable for providing reports and analysis on depot cost, performance, and mitigation. Devising and implementing maintenance schedules plans, and ensuring compliance with Statutory Inspections and best practices.

You will be responsible for the day-to-day operations of Cement import, storage, and transfer through the Northern region of the UK. Working closely with the transport, supply chain, engineering & other operations managers to ensure an aligned approach & success as a team, adding value to the overall business.

Location is flexible in the “Northern region” which is defined as four cement terminals located in Leith, Blyth, Dewsbury & Runcorn.


Key Responsibilities


  • Leading Health, Safety & Wellbeing initiatives for your reports at the Breedon Cement Depots and Terminals within your region.
  • Support the development and implementation of Logistics strategy for the GB Cement business.
  • Develop and rollout maintenance schedules, plans, arrangements for each site, in accordance with Statutory Inspections and best practices. Work closely with Engineering & SHE in determining best practice.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues and within the framework of the “partnership agreement” as required.
  • Project Management – work with the Project Team on any new development projects at each of the sites, or any new identified sites going forward
  • HR Management – control of HR issues, engagement, and development of people
  • Management of key subcontractors
  • Define and implementation of targets to effectively manage equipment and costs of department.
  • Provide reports & analysis on depot cost, performance & mitigation.
  • Engineering Compliance – adherence to legal and corporate standards for depot maintenance.
  • Capex & Opex budget responsibility and implementation of projects.
  • Management of all Depots and Terminals with your region, ensuring the safe operation of all sites
  • Maintenance of all equipment associated with transfer and storage of Cement associated with GB Cement.
  • Build relationships with key business stakeholders and suppliers to drive value around the strategic objectives of the business.
  • Manage risk profile for area of responsibility.
  • Work in line with all Company Health, Safety & Wellbeing policies, procedures and standards.

Skills, Knowledge & Expertise


Do you offer…?
  • Proven experience and understanding of operations management in a similar or transferable heavy industry.
  • Experience of providing analytical data sets on cost performance and mitigation
  • Experience of operating and managing geographically dispersed teams and ability to travel.

  • Proven experience and understanding of operations management in a similar or transferable industry.
  • Health & Safety focused
  • Detail orientated and analytical, with a sound engineering understanding.
  • Proven experience of working collaboratively with numerous stakeholders at any given time (internally & externally) to achieve best outcomes.
  • Excellent communicator, verbal and written
  • A self-starter who can autonomously time manage, prioritise, produce, and provide visibility to key outcomes.
  • Ability to manage both fixed & mobile operatives across a large geographical area
  • Demonstrate a willingness to travel across the region & be a visible, role model to the team
  • Evidence of influencing and driving continuous improvement.
  • Learning from and working with other disciplines to deliver outstanding outcomes internally and externally.
  • DESIRABLE: A strong understanding of the cement business / bulk powder handling, storage and distribution.
