Job Title: Legal Counsel
Working Pattern: Monday to Friday (09:00-17:00)
Salary: £60,000 - £95,000 (dependent on experience) up to 30% bonus and benefits
Location: Hybrid working from our Manchester or Blackpool Offices
Reporting line: General counsel

The successful candidate will be responsible for the following:

  • Corporate advisory: advise internal stakeholders (and negotiate with external counterparts where relevant) on fundraising, mergers and acquisitions, restructurings, and intra-group agreements
  • Finance advisory: advise internal stakeholders and negotiate with external counterparts on external financing and structuring
  • Company Secretarial / Governance: Provide legal and company secretarial advice and support to the Chairman, the Board, and its sub-committees
  • Investor relations: support the team in managing investor relations
  • Advise on UK banking and financial services law and regulatory matters
  • Supporting and advising every team from across the business with effective and wide-ranging legal and strategic advice on a variety of matters including general banking and regulatory matters, contracts, negotiations, documentation, related client issues, employment, pensions, commercial, compliance, IP, IT, litigation, marketing and advertising and data protection
  • Support the organisation in managing outside counsel relationships in a demonstrably cost-effective manner
  • Legal advice on client relevant and other literature across the business, including review of terms and conditions and advertising. Ensure all output is compliant with current and proposed regulations relating to operation of the Bank
  • Deliver and/or provide input to training to the business on regulatory and other legal matters.
  • Stay up to date with relevant changes in the law.

What we're looking for:
The successful candidate will demonstrate the following experience skills and behaviours:

Essential:

  • At least five years post qualification experience (PQE is a guide and we'd be open to speak to relevant candidates), ideally to include previous in-house fast-paced environment experience and excellent private practice training in any of general corporate, general banking or TMT team, and can show a detailed knowledge and understanding of retail banking (specifically in relation to products such as first and second charge mortgages and savings accounts)
  • You will be driven and able to apply your existing knowledge and approach across a very wide range of legal (and quasi-legal) areas with the ability to escalate issues appropriately
  • Able to handle and negotiate multiple transactions, working autonomously, demonstrating drive as well as excellent interpersonal and prioritisation skills
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and a fluency in English
  • Strong skills in drafting legal documents (corporate documents, internal procedures)
  • Excellent academic and law firm credentials or other relevant experience
  • Highly customer-centric with a passion to deliver a best-in-class customer experience
  • A track record of taking initiative and "getting stuck in"

  • A positive, self-sufficient leader with excellent communication skills, intellect, and energy
  • Very sound judgment and business instinct with a desire to challenge traditional thinking
  • Loves to learn about the business and new areas of law, and is willing to apply new skills and knowledge in a commercial context
  • Risk-spot and proactively identify legal solutions that act as a control to eliminate or mitigate risk
