Working on behalf of a Local Authority, Aatom Recruitment has a new opportunity for a Senior Corporate Lawyer on an initial 3 months contract with the possibility of further extension.
Responsibilities and Duties
- To provide or ensure the provision of high quality legal advice to the client, Executive and other Members and Officers including personal attendance and advice at meetings of the Executive and committees as appropriate.
- To advise on the client’s Constitution, decision making and other corporate governance matters and processes.
- To attend Executive, committee and other meetings as required.
- To comply with the professional rules, guidance and regulations applicable to a Solicitor or Barrister in England and to assist in ensuring that the Shared Legal Service complies.
- To support the Director to provide strategic leadership to the staff in the service ensuring on-going staff development.
- To develop the capacity and capabilities of the Shared Legal Services teams to deliver the best mix of external and internal legal advice.
- To comply with and carry out all duties with due regard to the client’s equal opportunities policy. To appoint and oversee the input of counsel and external specialist legal advisers as required, and to handle specific projects and cases.
- To advise Members on the Code of Conduct and other matters relating to ethical governance.
- To be responsible for the arrangements for complaints that Members have breached the Code of Conduct and dealing with complaints.
- To undertake or to appoint others to undertake internal reviews of responses to requests for information under the freedom of information legislation.
Requirements
- Admitted solicitor, barrister or CiLEX Fellow with significant post qualification experience
- Evidence of regular professional training
- Substantial and significant experience of local government law and practice
- Monitoring officer or deputy monitoring officer experience preferred
- Significant experience of working in or for the public sector
- Ability to work at corporate level and across departments
- Knowledge of shared services within local government
- Comprehensive knowledge of the current political landscape for local government and a thorough understanding of local government and political processes
- High level of political awareness and the ability to interact effectively with Members of the team and to proactively advise on solutions to problems.
- Excellent interpersonal skills.
