Job description

We are looking for a motivated, compassionate person with wood work qualifications and skills, to work with adults in a specialist in and outpatient neurological rehabilitation centre. The person will also need good communication and organisational skills.

This post involves working within the Occupational Therapy team to help adults with neurological conditions, such as strokes and head injuries, to regain their independence and quality of life.

The post holder will be working with patients under the direction of OccupationalTtherapists and the workshop manager to assist patients with woodwork projects as part of their rehabilitation goals.

Other duties include administrative tasks such as the ordering of materials and the monitoring and cleaning of equipment.

The post holder will require wood working qualifications such as City and Guilds Training or equivalent to level 2 in woodwork skills, alongside an interest in working with people with disabilities.

Experience of working with adults with disabilities within a health or social care setting would be preferable.

Training, support and regular supervision would be provided.

Occupational Therapy within the Neurological Rehabilitation Service and the Oxford Centre for Enablement (OCE)

The Neurological Rehabilitation Service at the OCE provides in and outpatient rehabilitation for adults with neurological disorders and a day service for patients with long term neurological disorders.

The Occupational Therapy team provides assessment and treatment to patients admitted to the service working within a multidisciplinary team of physiotherapists, nurses, doctors, speech and language therapists and clinical psychologists.

The woodwork workshop is situated within the Occupational Therapy team and provides a therapeutic functional activity which enables patients to work on their individual rehabilitation goals.

MAIN PURPOSE OF THE POST:

  • To work as a member of the specialist Occupational Therapy team
  • To assist the Occupational Therapists in the rehabilitation of both in/day and out patients with acquired brain injury using the woodwork workshop as the therapeutic medium, under the overall direction of the Lead Occupational Therapist
  • To undertake workshop duties autonomously in the workshop and within the community when appropriate
  • To plan and provide workshop projects for patients within the framework laid down by therapists and as an integral part of patients rehabilitation goals
  • To implement and evaluate workshop interventions in relation to their Occupational Therapy treatment programmes
  • To record patient information
  • To maintain and monitor workshop equipment
  • To input any required data onto IT systems
  • To work with all other members of the inter-disciplinary team as required.
DUTIES AND RESPOSIBILITIES:
Communication:
1. To participate in regular team meetings
2. To provide and receive routine information to/from staff, patients and family/carers
3. To promote good working relationships with all disciplines working within the unit and Trust.
4. To feedback patient information/progress to occupational therapists and other members of the inter-disciplinary team as required both verbally and written
5. To facilitate patient’s participation in their rehabilitation programmes using encouragement, reassurance, tact, sensitivity, overcoming potential barriers to patients understanding who may have communication, behavioural and/or cognitive difficulties.
6. To liaise with occupational therapists regarding individual patient’s treatment objectives and feedback when goals achieved and jointly agree goal progression within workshop.

Clinical Responsibilities:
1. To provide individual and group activities specialising in woodwork activities under the overall supervision of an Occupational Therapist and woodwork Workshop Manager
2. To agree, organise, set up and monitor a variety of therapeutic woodwork projects appropriate for patients, with different levels of disability under the overall direction of an Occupational Therapist and woodwork Workshop Manager
3. To carry a caseload of in/out and day patients, who are attending workshop, designing, grading and completing projects relevant to the individual patients’ rehabilitation goals, under the overall direction of the Workshop Manager and Occupational Therapist
4. To assist in cleaning, ordering and administrative tasks as required by the woodwork workshop and the Occupational Therapy Department.
5. To work with groups of patients to design and fabricate woodwork projects
6. To work with patients in community settings to facilitate the development of leisure or vocational activities for discharge
7. To independently design and prepare for woodwork projects using the workshop machinery
8. To order materials/supplies for the workshop service and to liaise with Procurement and local suppliers under the overall direction of the Workshop Manager.
9. To physically assist other members of staff with a patient’s personal needs as required e.g. if a patient needs to be helped to use the toilet while s/he is attending a therapy session.
10. To accommodate visitors and students within the woodwork workshop under the overall supervision of the Workshop Manager and Lead Occupational Therapist.
11. To record occupational therapy intervention in the Occupational Therapy notes in compliance with prescribed Trust and OT professional guidelines.
12. To assess the patient’s response to the workshop activities in relation to their goals and adjust/adapt techniques as required maximising the patient’s participation in the activity.
13. To prepare short written and verbal summaries as part of a patient’s progress report in advance of clinical meetings as directed by the named occupational therapist.

Planning and Organisational Skills
1. To manage own day to day work tasks and prioritise work load with reference to workshop manager
2. To assist the workshop manager in carrying our relevant OT and IDT in-service training in relation to the woodwork workshop
3. To assist the workshop manager in ensuring the necessary materials/resources and workshop equipment is available and in safe working order and when not, acting quickly to resolve.
