What will I be doing?

As our Occupational Health Nurse you will provide a professional and efficient service of carrying out pre-employment and refresher medicals in line with Network Rail Standards. The role will also offer support to stakeholders in relation to Case Management and Health Surveillance. You will carry out D&A tests in line with strict chain of custody rules and processes, ensuring all documentation needs to be completed and stored securely. On a day to day basis your duties will include:

· Carrying out pre-employment medicals and periodic health surveillance in line with the necessary Network Rail and HSE Standards, in collaboration with the HSQE dept. Evaluating job applicants and employees to determine their fitness for work. Conducting pre-employment medical exams, drug screenings, vaccinations, and ongoing health monitoring.

  • Working closely with employers, managers, and employees to develop and implement policies and procedures that promote a safe and healthy work environment. Providing guidance on compliance with occupational health and safety regulations. Addressing employee concerns regarding health and safety issues. Ensuring that all OH-related policies under INFRASkills are properly linked to other Group policies including those under HR and HSQE ownership.
  • Drugs and alcohol testing: Ensuring relevant information is collated ahead of the test, i.e., the type of D&A (Pre-employment/Pre-sponsorship/Review/Random); ensuring the testing area is prepared and secure as per requirements; ensuring the accurate completion of the Chain of Custody forms and booking forms; maintain the master records with relevant information following tests, i.e., names/dates/type of test/sentinel number/result etc; carry out the tests in line with Chain of Custody rules and procedures; thoroughly check laboratory results upon receipt for abnormalities/non-negative results/diluted; ensure all D&A and medical results are uploaded to Sentinel; print and store a copy of the medical/D&A certificates; ensure any D&A tests, which are returned (i.e., diluted sample) are re-booked if necessary; order and maintain testing stock (Sample pots/chain of custody forms/printer paper etc.
  • Supporting with employee case management, ensuring advice is delivered in a timely and professional manner. Assessing and treating work-related injuries and illnesses. Providing first aid, administering medications, and coordinating with physicians or specialists when necessary. In conjunction with HR, assist managers with advice on sickness absence. Assisting in managing workers' compensation cases and facilitate the return-to-work process.
  • Supporting employee well-being and mental health: Providing counselling and support to employees experiencing work-related stress, mental health challenges, or personal issues affecting their well-being or job performance. Facilitating employee assistance programs and refer individuals to appropriate resources.
  • Supporting with wellbeing days and initiatives for the business, developing health promotion and prevention services to improve employee wellness, prevent diseases, and promote healthy lifestyles. Providing education on topics like nutrition, exercise, stress management, and smoking cessation.
  • Assessing and managing workplace health hazards: Identify potential health hazards in the workplace, such as chemical exposures, ergonomic risks, or infectious diseases. Assessing the impact of these hazards on employee health and develop strategies to mitigate or eliminate them.
  • Participating in emergency preparedness and response: Contributing to planning and implementing emergency response procedures in the workplace. Providing first aid training, coordinate evacuation plans, and respond to medical emergencies.
  • Documenting and maintaining health records: Maintaining accurate and confidential health records for employees, ensuring compliance with privacy regulations. Documenting health assessments, treatments, referrals, and other relevant information.
  • Supporting the CEO, Director of People and Head of Training with the growth of the medicals and D&A business as required, including visits to Clients.

Hours of work

This role currently offers a 40-hour contract working between the hours of 0800 – 1630 Monday to Friday.

In addition, to ensure effective delivery of this role and fully contribute towards team and business objectives, we will be looking for the following from our successful candidate:

Qualifications

  • Registered on part 1 of the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) register
  • Registered nurse or midwide and on part 2 of the register or holds an Occupational Health Diploma
  • Audiometry certificate and HAVs qualification from an approved Faculty of Occupational Medicine Course

  • Excellent IT Skills with experience of the MS Office suite
  • Ability to influence others and constructively challenge the status quo where required
  • Confident in the use of telephone and meeting people at all levels on a face-to-face basis to be able to plan and coordinate site visits

Knowledge and experience

  • Substantial experience in a similar role is mandatory
  • Experience in independently carrying out health surveillance, including Audiometry, skin surveillance, Spirometry, and HAVs
  • Prior experience with audit preparation and mentoring would be desirable
  • Familiarity with pre-employment questionnaires and drug and alcohol testing is desirable
  • Sector knowledge and Network Rail requirements would be advantageous
  • Experience of working with professionals from other disciplines such as HSQE and HR, in order to provide a streamlined and joined up OH service to the business

· Possess or be able to obtain a DBS certificate
