Job description
Obtain detailed medical histories of patients to systematically collect data on patient background, physical and mental condition, medications and treatments and other pertinent information. Perform physical examinations of patients to assist in the assessment of the health status of the individual. Observe signs and symptoms associated with changes in the physical and emotional health of the patient. Discriminate between normal and abnormal findings and make referrals to the appropriate services.
Order routine laboratory tests such as blood chemistry, x-ray and urinalysis. Prescribe appropriately, referring to Department of Health Guidelines for Nurse Prescribers Extended Formulary. Review cases with GP, to discuss findings and to devise plans of patient care which covers medical and nursing aspects. Assess telephone enquiries from patients.
Review and assess enquiries from reception staff regarding prescription problems and laboratory results. Review and prioritise telephone requests from patients for home visits. Instruct, counsel and guide patients and their families toward the achievement of optimum health.
