Full Time Leeds, England 27055 - 32934 GBP ANNUAL Today
Job description

Are you a final year Mental Health or Learning Disability student nurse or you have newly qualified as a mental health or learning disability nurse? * Would you like to work in a specialist mental health and learning disability trust that values, respects and invests in its staff?

We are currently recruiting newly qualified nurses to join our diverse range of clinical services in Leeds and York and we are looking forward to supporting you as a newly qualified nurse through our preceptorship programme.

We recognise that the transition from being a newly qualified practitioner to becoming an experienced member of the multi-disciplinary team can be an exciting and challenging experience. Therefore, we have developed a highly regarded, confidence building preceptorship programme to support you as you start your nursing career. As part of our preceptorship programme, you will undertake a preceptorship framework which aims to promote professional development based on an extension and expansion of skills acquired throughout your clinical training.

You will be assigned a preceptor who will be an experienced and knowledgeable practitioner whose role will be to guide you and offer professional and personal support throughout your preceptorship whilst support your learning and development. You will also receive support from the Preceptorship Lead who is responsible for the oversight of the preceptorship programme and their support will help in smoothing the transition from student to registered practitioner.

You will be allocated up to two study days every month for the duration of your preceptorship to consolidate learning and development with peers. One day will be used for attending programme events and the second day can be used for self-directed learning.

The aims of our preceptorship programme are to:

  • Give you a good start and ensure you have a good induction
  • Develop your confidence as an independent practitioner
  • Increase your job satisfaction, leading to improved patient satisfaction
  • Invest in your future and your career aspirations
  • Give you a sense of commitment to your patients, colleagues, and our Trust
  • Develop your understanding of working within the nursing profession and the requirements of regulators
  • Develop your personal responsibility for maintaining up to date knowledge.
We are a high quality, high performing NHS foundation trust. We are the main provider of specialist mental health and learning disability services in Leeds. We also provide specialist inpatient services in York as well as some highly specialised services across the country.
We employ around 3,000 staff and every year we have contact with over 25,000 service users. Our vision is to provide outstanding mental health and learning disability services as an employer of choice. Our ambition is to support our service users and carers, our staff and the communities we serve to live healthy and fulfilling lives. We need people like you to help us achieve our goals; to live our lives free from stigma and discrimination; and to improve the lives of people with a learning disability and mental ill health.
We perform well against local and national targets and in our most recent CQC inspection, 85% of our services were rated good or outstanding.
As a teaching trust with strong links to local universities, we are a centre of excellence for teaching, research, and development.

The preceptorship programmeis based on an extension and expansion of the skills and competencies required of final year students as they move into the role of a new graduate nurse. You will be expected to achieve all the required competencies and objectives within 6 to 12 months.

Over the preceptorship period, you’ll be expected to demonstrate the ability to work independently, providing competent direct care to patients. Your preceptor and their clinical team will provide support, learning and development opportunities to ensure you can meet the objectives.

In addition to clinical competencies, additional assessment methods aim to bring together the preceptorship process and demonstrate that we’ve supported your learning. All elements of the preceptorship process must be completed before the preceptor and team manager final sign off.

  • If you are a student at The University of Leeds or Leeds Beckett University studying Mental Health or Learning Disability nursing then please note you do not need to apply for this position because The Leeds and York Partnership Foundation Trust, LYPFT, has an existing relationship with these universities.
