Position Title: Kitchen Assistant, Child Care

Location: Supports three YMCA Child Care programs in close proximity

  • Waterview YMCA Child Care (150 Water Street, Vancouver, BC)
  • Portside YMCA Child Care (151 Cordova Street, Vancouver, BC)
  • Woodwards YMCA Childcare (111 W Hastings, Vancouver, BC)

Terms: Full-time, Permanent
Shift: 35 hours per week, Monday-Friday, varying shifts between 7:30am and 6:00pm
Salary: $16.40 per hour, this position is eligible for benefits
Start Date: As soon as possible
Reports to: Cook, Child Care

Nature and Scope:
Reporting to the Cook, the Kitchen Assistant supports with the preparation and delivery of nutritional snacks and hot meals for 30-40 children ages 0 to 5, in a licensed child care program. The main duties of the Kitchen Assistant include preparing food and maintaining a clean and tidy kitchen. The Kitchen Assistant will provide vacation and sick time coverage for the Cooks at all three locations which means they will need to occasionally take the lead in the kitchen.

Responsibilities:

  • Under the direction of the Cook, prepare nutritious daily snacks and hot lunch for 30-40 children on a daily basis, Monday to Friday
  • Ensure that all food adheres to allergy plans and that cultural and other dietary restrictions are followed
  • Meet all health and food preparation and storage standards as per Vancouver Coastal Health
  • Report unsafe conditions, incidents, accidents or other relevant issues to the Cook
  • Clean eating areas, kitchen area and kitchen equipment by following proper cleaning procedures and ensuring the highest level of cleaning standards are maintained
  • Establish and maintain positive daily communication with staff, children and parents
  • Attend and participate in staff meetings as required
  • To maintain regular attendance, punctuality and to be appropriately dressed and well groomed.
  • Lead the hot meal program as needed, when the Cook is away


Qualifications/Experience:

  • Food Safe certificate required
  • Completion of Grade 10 required
  • Emergency First Aid certificate (can be obtained within first 30 days of start date)
  • 1-2 years of experience in food service preferably cooking for large groups of children, including experience in proper food handling, preparation and meal planning
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions and work independently and as part of a team
  • Experience working with young children in a child care/recreational setting, an asset
  • Successful candidates will be required to provide a current and satisfactory Criminal Reference Check/Vulnerable Sector Search issued no later than six (6) months preceding your start date
  • The YMCA has implemented a mandatory COVID-19 vaccination policy requiring all staff and volunteers to be fully vaccinated, as per the timeline set out by the province
