The ideal candidate will lead a team to research prospective technologies, partnerships and solutions that accelerate progress towards SMUD’s Zero Carbon Vision. This leader will collaborate with business units across the organization as well as regional partners to identify technology gaps and bring forward solutions that can cost effectively eliminate gaps and barriers.

Purpose

To plan, develop, implement and manage programs and projects in advanced energy generation and end use technologies and that best meet the strategic directives and needs of SMUD.

Nature and Scope

This position is the Chief Advanced Energy Technologies Officer for SMUD; Assist in the planning, development, implementation and managing of Department, Business Unit and SMUD goals, objectives, policies and priorities in partnership with the Department Manager, AGM and Department managers related to Research and Development and advanced energy supply and end use technologies; develops and implements strategies and plans for leveraging SMUD budget resources with federal and state energy RandD programs; selects, trains, motivates, evaluates, and develops subordinate personnel and ensures that strategic objectives and priorities of the business unit are achieved and coordinated with other departments.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Manages the planning, development and evaluation of SMUD’s advanced energy research and development programs by conducting energy technologies assessments and developing/updating an executives-approved Energy R&D Strategic Plan for SMUD; oversees the technical and scientific integrity of multiple energy R&D programs in the department and provides critical leadership and technical input to the SD 10 Monitoring Report on Research & Development to the Board of Directors.
  • Directs SMUD’s strategies/plans for leveraging SMUD budget resources with federal and state R&D programs including participation in federal & state R&D programs planning and national & state conferences/workshops, and the preparation of grant proposals to federal and state agencies. Coordinate and seek funding from other organizations with similar goals to conduct research, development and demonstration of advanced energy technologies; Oversees ER&D budgets and recommends to Department Manager future adjustments consistent with technologies advancements progress and SMUD needs.
  • Directs the work of subordinates in a functional unit in the Research and Development Department and maintains staffing levels and work quality in order to meet defined objectives and assigned unit responsibility by interpreting and executing SMUD policies and procedures that affect subordinate units; recommending modifications to operating policies; overseeing and evaluating work through subordinate supervisors or experienced lead employees who exercise independence in their assignments; hiring, firing, training, coaching, mentoring and developing subordinates; advising units on tasks and operations as required to solve complex problems; ensuring staff safety and prevention of personal injury and equipment loss; and acting to ensure project and operational schedules and budgets are met. Ensure that work functions in area of responsibility comply with SMUD policies, practices and procedures and that operating objectives in area of responsibility are met within expected timing, budgetary, quantity, accuracy, safety and quality standards.
  • Facilitates the development and placement of Advanced Energy R&D Technologies in utility and commercial applications by determining advanced energy technologies needs of SMUD Departments, collaborating with SMUD Departments on joint projects to transition advanced technologies into market adoption & use programs of SMUD (e.g., stages & gates); collaborating and developing R&D partnerships with manufacturers, suppliers, installers and customers relative to the demonstration, manufacture, distribution and installation of advanced technologies equipment and technology in various applications, and providing the public with the information and education that will encourage the movement of advanced technologies to the marketplace.
  • Plans, directs, conducts, manages and evaluates the energy research and development programs of multiple energy R&D subject areas to meet SMUD’s carbon reduction, renewable energy, advanced storage, and integrated resource plan goals and, where feasible, target these activities to provide local benefits.
  • Represents SMUD before legislative, regulatory and industry audiences relative to advanced renewables and distributed generation programs.
  • Performs related duties, as required.

Required Education

  • BS/BA from an accredited college or university in engineering, one of the physical sciences, environmental science or related field.

Required Experience Qualifications

  • Ten (10) or more years of progressively responsible relevant work experience in project management and research & development including managing R&D programs and staff in organized teams and bringing about successful project achievement; successfully moving projects from applications research & demonstration state to full commercialization.

Knowledge Of
