The Opportunity
GKN Aerospace Filton specialises in the design and manufacture of large complex structural wing assemblies, detailed metallic components and wing systems for a combination of both civil and military aircraft. We have a range of plant, machinery and machine tools, some of which is state-of-the art, and are currently investing imminently in new machinery. Our new Nightshift Maintenance Engineer will join a friendly team of 6 who work effectively and efficiently on breakdown and repairs. The team handle the planned scheduled maintenance and all associated tasks on both conventional and CNC machine tools and plant. This is a permanent role. Current shift pattern is:
Week 1: Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Saturday
Week 2: Wednesday, Thursday, Friday.
Shift: 7pm - 7am, Built in overtime at 1.58x base rate + nightshift allowance of 38%
How You'll Contribute
In this role, you will maintain and diagnose faults on:
Machine tool/plant including:
- machine tool axes including linear guides / rails, motors, gearboxes, lead screws, bearings
- machine guarding both internally and externally
- hydraulic and pneumatic systems including counter balance circuits, hydraulic clamping, hydraulic motors, rams, cylinders
- This also involved checking and topping up various oils, fault finding & diagnostics on complex Machine tools/plant as well as diagnosing faults on rails, gearboxes etc
Machine alignments by:
- checking and correction of machine alignments, by clocking bars, datum holes and slip gauges, laser alignments, ball bar tests
- correction by changing parameters in CNC. control, testing with machine cuts/machine cycles
Plant
- maintaining mainly associated plant such as CNC milling machines as well as CNC lathes, CNC Gear cutters, Jig Borers, Robots, Swarf conveyors, coolant systems, etc.
You will also have some electrical appreciation, including:
- knowledge of machine tools electrically
- knowledge of machine parameters and diagnostics
- ability to run calibration programmes
- how to disconnect pumps & motors
- how to reset trip & fuses

In this role, you will be the Senior Engineer overseeing the maintenance and diagnosis of faults on:
Machine tool/Plant, including:
- Maintaining machine tool axes including linear guides / rails, motors, gearboxes, lead screws, bearings
- Maintaining machine guarding both internally and externally
- Maintaining hydraulic and pneumatic systems including counter balance circuits, hydraulic clamping, hydraulic motors, rams, cylinders
- Checking and topping up various oils
- Fault finding & diagnostics on complex machine tools/plant
- Diagnosing faults on rails, gearboxes etc
Machine alignments, including:
- Checking and correction of machine alignments, by clocking bars, datum holes and slip gauges, laser alignments, ball bar tests
- Correction by changing parameters in CNC. control, testing with machine cuts/machine cycles
Plant, including:
- Maintaining associated plant such as swarf conveyors, coolant systems, centrifuges, cranes, presses, ovens, pipe benders etc.
Electrical appreciation:
- Knowledge of machine tools electrically
- Knowledge of machine parameters and diagnostics
- Electrical/Electronic fault finding
- Running calibration programs
- Disconnecting pumps & motors
- Resetting trip & fuses
